Je crois que les 90 and up sont à injection électronique donc 89 and down carbu.

For starters like was previously mentioned by "the damned" the clean, unmolested examples are getting harder and harder to find, and you are going to pay top dollar for a low km perfect +straight car, figure upwards of $10g for a coupe/hatch. The good drivers that need small repairs are going in the 5-8 range and mostly all you will find under 5k is rusted, beaten junk. Most of the automatic cars are full equips, and heavy.....Stock 5 gear coupes will run in the high 13's, loaded auto convertibles mid 15's.

You biggest worry after rusted subframes, door pillars and rear torquebox (trailing arm mounts) is the previous owner. Look for low owner cars with perfect maintence records. Though since you are a mechanic, a solid complete body could also be a good alternative, as mechanical parts are straight forward and very easy to locate. There are a few U.S companies that now cater to the 5.0 crowd, and offer a pretty full range of resto body and trim parts, not to mention the countless aftermarket supplies for performance parts. The 5.0 engine is probably now only second to the 350 chevy in ease to build.

The 5.0 ho started in 1982 with the 2bbl 157 hp 302ci, which became a 4 bbl 175 hp engine in 1983-85. There are few cfi injection automatics built in 84-85 era, but to be honest , I haven't seen one in years now, and eitherway were probably rare this side of the North America. EFI became standard equipment in 1986 (200hp) and was perfected so to speak in 1987-88 and FOrd once again upped the hp to 225, allong with the flush mounted headlamps, smooth 1/4 glass and lego dash. Mass air flow was debuted in 1989 and continued on into 1993. One of the first mods most of the 1987-88 5.0 guys did was convert to MassAir once performance upgrades began.
Power dropped in 1993 back to 200hp,offically due to the manner they calculated ratings, and differennt pistons amonst other changes, but most in the feild think this was just a crock by Ford, to make the sn95's seem more powerfull.

All 4 cyl cars and the 79-84's came with small, and wealk 7.5 inch rear diffs, the 85-93 cars had the stronger 8.8's with stock 2.73 rear gears. No cost option was the 3.08 rear gear. The automatics came stock with only the 3.27 ratio.

I think a stock well maintained auto will be in most cases stronger than the stock T5 (Especially when drag racing), but there are also many upgraded trans on the market for guys who need something more bullitproof. For normal day-to-day driving chores a good cond. T5 would be more than up to the job.

For the record, if you happen to find a 87-93 5.0 with a carb (and there are many out there) I'd double check that it is a real v8 car first , before paying a premium price. Though it is possible that somebody oldschool may have removed the EFI system, the more likely possibility is that you are looking at a converted 4cyl car. As clean v8 bodies are harder and harder to find, many have taken this route when modifing (as chances are you are eventually going change the brakes, suspension, diff anyways) , but you do want to be carefull that you don't end up with a poor running death trap done by a backyard grease monkey.

Good luck with your hunt !!

BTW, if Quebec does not seem to have the car your looking for, try looking a little west of the QC border, as centre Ontario was the meca of 5.0 for many years, and there are still many more clean examples to be found over there!!!!

If you are looking for one a friend of mine(dealer) has 2 for sale...a 1988 black GT and a 1989 black GT both 5 spd.

He is located in pierrefonds.

Alot of good info..

87-93 AOD cars came with 2.73 gears though as well..with 3.27's being an option. Only (1) of the 3-4 AOD cars I have had had the 3.27 gears. Same with my 5spd cars too...all but (1) had 2.73's. My 91 SSP had the 3.08 gears but all my other 5.0 5spd cars had 2.73 gears.

I have noticed ALOT of carbed 87-93 at the track and in Quebec period...as well as alot of hacked up 79-86 with the newer 87-93 body but still sporting the old interior. DEFINITELY check the vin to make sure it is a 5.0 car!!!
