The Montreal International Autoshow is the one show that car enthusiasts in Montreal can look forward to attending in the dead of winter. I’m here at the annual press day where the show is kind enough to offer journalists a sneak peak at all the new models complete with presentations from the auto manufacturers themselves. Not having an immense crowd is also very convenient for taking photos. I was able to breeze along and snap just about everything I needed before noon.
The press starts off on the 7th floor in “7th heaven”, the room full of Ferraris, Lambos, Porsches, Aston Martins, Maseratis and the like. Nothing much new to report here as the layout is very similar to last year’s. The gentlemen from Mercedes was kind enough to fire up the SL63 AMG for us much to the annoyance of security. We have Luc from PCMTL to thank for doing all the convincing to make that happen.
Next up was level 5 including Ford, Lincoln, BMW, Audi, Volvo, Jaguar & Land Rover. The big three toned down their displays noticeably but as always they still beat out all the others in terms of floor space. The new Ford Fiesta is particularly eye-catching as is the new Mustang. Ford is featuring every vehicle from the Focus to the Econoline. I’m not sure how much the latter belongs at the show but they seem to like to show off the latest design to the infamous rapist van each year. BMW always has one of the nicest booths at the show and this year is no exception. You can check out the new 7-Series as well as gorgeous red M3 coupe and 335 cabrio. In terms of cars, however, I have to take my hat off to Audi. Audi’s lineup of vehicles is by far the most beautiful of all the manufacturers and this fact is evident even though they are placed right across from the fancy BMW display. They don’t have a boring car to offer. From the re-designed A4 to the new Q5 I think I sat in every single one of their demos. Volvo, on the other hand, seems to be competing with Buick over who can build the most boring vehicles in the world save for the C230 which, if it didn’t look like an S40 with the back chopped off, could be nice.
The ground floor, which is where the public will start the tour, contains the rest of the manufacturers. New vehicles include the G37 convertible, 350Z, Honda Insight, Chevy Camaro, Dodge Challenger, Mazda 3 and many more that I didn’t have time to see before I left. Chrysler’s kioske is simply massive but surprisingly bare. I suppose with is a sign of the hard times but they could have filled it in a little more or simply taken less space. At least there were two Challengers to sit in. Honda, Acura, Infiniti, Nissan, Subaru, Mercedes, Mazda, Lexus and Toyota were very nicely put together as usual. Hyundai is making a big splash this year with a magnificantly large and futuristic display. Volkswagen has come a long way from just a few years ago when they rivaled Volvo for boringness. They are on par with the rest of the manufacturerswith a nice and inviting booth. GM was the last booth I visited and I probably spent the least amount of time in. I feel like im in one of their million dealerships looking at yet another model that is the same as the previous year but for some reason has a different name (Traverse?…why?). Their theme is Green but I don’t know what it means because the stickers are even on the gas guzzlers like the Avalanche which conveniently has N/A for fuel economy on the data sheet. I found this to be the same on gas hogs form other manufacturers as well.
