Health authorities are planning to sterilize nearly 10,000 people in southern China over the next four days as part of a population control programme.

Some of the people in Puning City will be forced to have the procedure carried out against their will.

Amnesty International says forced sterilization “amounts to torture”.

Reports in the Chinese media say that Puning Health authorities in Guangdong Province have launched a special campaign to sterilize people who already have at least one child in order to ensure local birth control quotas are met.

Chinese newspaper reports say that those who refuse to be sterilized have seen their elderly mothers or fathers taken away and detained.

Hundreds of people in Puning are said to have been locked up.

lets wait for edt to jump in this thread and say again that China is a "democracy"!

haha

China never claimed to have "freedom or expression" or an "Open Democracy", but they do have a "democracy" where the government acts to the general will of the people, on the other hand the US is a hypocrite, say one thing, but do another !

Right, I'm sure they all want to be sterilized!

I'm sure Tiananmen Square was the general will of the people.

I'm sure the people wish to be told what to think and what to say.

China is a great empire democratic empire!! All other nations must die in fires to the great China because she is the truest! China is one of the world's oldest continuous civilizations.[1][2] In the 19th and 20th century, imperialism, wars and civil wars have damaged the country and its economy. In the 1950s, change to economic policies in the Republic of China (Taiwan) transformed the island into a technology-oriented industrialized developed economy. It became known as one of the Four Asian Tigers along with Hong Kong, South Korea and Singapore. In mainland China, in the 1970s, reforms known as the Four Modernizations modernized the agriculture, industry, technology and defense, eventually making the PRC one of the major powers.[3][4][5][6][7] China is viewed as the source of many major inventions.[8] It has also one of the world's oldest written language systems.Historically, China's cultural sphere has extended across East Asia as a whole, with Chinese religion, customs, and writing systems being adopted to varying degrees by neighbors such as Japan, Korea and Vietnam. The first evidence of human presence in the region was found at the Zhoukoudian cave. It is one of the first known specimens of Homo erectus, now commonly known as the Peking Man, estimated to have lived from 300,000 to 780,000 years ago.[9][10][11]The subsequent Han Dynasty ruled China between 206 BC and 220 AD, and created a lasting Han cultural identity among its populace that extends to the present day. The Han Dynasty expanded the empire's territory considerably with military campaigns reaching Korea, Vietnam, Mongolia and Central Asia, and also helped establish the Silk Road in Central Asia. After Han's collapse, another period of disunion followed, including the highly chivalric period of the Three Kingdoms. Independent Chinese states of this period such as Wu opened diplomatic relations with Japan, introducing the Chinese writing system there. In 580 AD, China was reunited under the Sui. However, the Sui Dynasty was short-lived after a failure in the Goguryeo-Sui Wars (598–614) weakened it.By the early 20th century, mass civil disorder had begun, and calls for reform and revolution were heard across the country. The 38-year-old Emperor Guangxu died under house arrest on 14 November 1908, suspiciously just a day before Cixi's own death. With the throne empty, he was succeeded by Cixi's handpicked heir, his two year old nephew Puyi, who became the Xuantong Emperor. Guangxu's consort, who became the Empress Dowager Longyu. In another coup de'tat, Yuan ShiKai overthrew the last Qing emperor, and forced empress Dowager Longyu to sign the abdication decree as regent in 1912, ending two thousand years of imperial rule in China. She died, childless, in 1913.

Capitalist countries did it too. To Gipsies and other peoples. Nazis did it and they were capitalist.

Again demonstrating your great intelligence and understanding of history.

This will come to Canada and the Western World. Give it time.

The hippies will volunteer us for it.

nazis were socialist dood.

So was Soviet Union. Yet Nazi Germany had private enterprise and big business supported Hitler. Nazi Germany had a lot of socialist policies but they were not really a socialist country, not any more then modern Sweden. Untill "total war" state of economy was declared, it was not even a properly planned economy.

What? One child policy? Sounds like a GREAT idea. I think children should require a license too. That way, alcoholics and other riff-raff will remember to pull out or face higher taxes.

There is NO escaping the fact that we have almost run out of space on this planet and being able to live on other planets is at least 70-100 years off.

Why do ppl keep saying that? China and India ALONE has 1/3 of the population.

sure some countries might be dense but to say we're running out of space? that's absurd.

here's a 1994 map of population density. just to show how much untouched land we still have and how even though some countries might be dense it's no where closed to India or China.

here's a more precise one , a 2009 map which The LandScan dataset estimates “ambient” population density — where people are likely to be at noon. LandScan pixels are 30 arc-seconds (or about 1 km wide at the equator.

I am not talking just about physical space. India alone adds 30 MILLION people to the ranks of the middle class EACH YEAR and those people consume more and more resources to the point where they will soon catch up to the West. We can handle 1 billions more Africans, but not 500,000,000 more yuppies. Think of how many new cars will be hitting the road soon. How many TVs and batteries and ipods will have to be built.
