This past Tuesday, the first of March, Mazdaspeed held its annual luncheon to discuss the upcoming 2011 motorsports season. MC’ed by Dean Case, Mazdaspeed Communications Officer, and presided over by Robert Davis, Senior Vice President of Product Development & Quality, the informal and informative event reminded us of Mazda’s numerous accomplishments in the past, present, and most importantly, the future. Of the many, here’s nine:

1. More than Toyota, Nissan and Honda combined, Mazda earns the top spot as the most road raced manufacturer in America. How much of the field? 50% of the track.

2. With 900,000 MX-5s sold globally, the Miata is the number one roadster in history further explaining fact number one.

3. $47,000. The price of building a MX-5 Cup car, including the cost of a new Mazda.

4. $250,000. The value of winning the MX-5 Cup Championship. The equivalent of a median home in Trenton, New Jersey, or a closet in Los Angeles.

5. In pursuit of the MX-5 Cup title and many others, enthusiasts have spent over $75 million in Mazdaspeed parts. That’s enough bolt-ons to make Dr. 90210 blush or shrink with envy. The latter, presumably being something the Doc could “fix” by himself.

6. At 21 years, the Star Mazda Competition is not only old enough to legally take Jello shots, it’s also the longest running road-racing series in America.

7. 153. The number of RX-8-rotary-engine powered Star Mazdas sold. 153 is also divisible by the number “3”, which also happens to be the number of points or sides on a rotary. Coincidence? We think not.

8. While not a Star Mazda, a rotary-powered Mazda 787B took the overall win at the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. 20 years since the victory, Mazda is still the only Japanese manufacturer to do so.

9. As for the future of motorsports, Mazda is fully committed to the emerging B-Spec racing series which will involve other OEs. Look for some exciting news soon from the Road & Track front.

Thats a nice profit.

Thats a nice profit.

And if you think you can win a championship with that much prixe money with just a $47000 car and running expenses, you are sadly deluded.

Wait until you see all the receipts from the winning team before making the "Nice Profit" comment. ;)
