DEARBORN, Michigan — Ford has announced that the starting price of its Ford Focus ST-R racecar will be $98,995.

From the factory, the Ford racer will be ready to compete in the Grand-Am ST (Street Tuner) class, World Challenge TC and Canadian Touring Car Series, as well as the Nurburgring 24-Hour race.

The turnkey racecar is equipped with a sport suspension and exhaust, Ford Racing clutch, upgraded brakes and a limited-slip differential. Its 2.0-liter EcoBoost inline-4 is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. It is not known exactly how much more power the car will be loaded with over the Focus ST's stock 247-horsepower figure.

The exterior has the 2012 Focus ST body kit, brake cooling ducts, hood pins and a set of 18-inch BBS cast alloy wheels wearing Hoosier 225/40 R6 race rubber.

Inside are all the necessary racing accouterments, including Recaro seats with a six-point safety harness, FIA-certified safety cage, short-throw shifter, custom carbon-fiber switch panel and a Ford Racing steering wheel with quick release.

The ST-R is just one of the turnkey racers Ford has available for order from any dealership. Its other racers include the Ford Racing Mustang FR500C, FR500S, Cobra Jet, Boss 302R and Boss 302S.

Damn can't wait to see the specs on this .. Almost 100 000 for a Focus.

Pads and rotors are more important then number of pistons. And for all we know, the racing rules might limit what brake mods are possible.

Il faut être fou pour se payer une Focus a 100 000 dollars ou avoir vraiment beaucoup d'argent.

Couldn't you just buy a focus and build it up to racing spec for a fraction of the price?

I work for a professionnal touring car team, running in SCCA World Challenge un the US as well as regional racing here in Canada,

You have no idea how much it costs to build a COMPETITIVE race car from a production car. I requires a lot of development, fabrication and design work, not to mention all the time you will spend troubleshooting. So far i've built 3 cars (all the same platform) and each one gets better everytime, you learn a lot by building it, but it's also a very expensive way to do it.

Many privateers just don't have the knowledge, skills or time to build such a car, the Ford Racing Focus ST-R is cheap for a World Challenge racecar. For example: an FG2 civic to run competitively (i.e. not in the back of the grid) in World Challenge is around 120-130 000 $. Now imagine these are production based, can you imagine how much a GT2 spec Corvette costs ?

We usually start from low mileage salvage title cars to save money. Mostly flood damage cars, (no stuctural damage) then we:

Srip them down
acid dip the chassis
seam welding, build a cage
strip all the wiring harness (to save weight)
re-build / modify the engine
re-build / modify the transmisson
install all safety systems (seat fitting, seat belts, fire extinguisher, extinguisher plumbing)
Suspension work, often incolving many custom one off parts $$$$
Brakes.

If you factor in all the time we put in (around 4-500 hours @ 100$/hour), base car (15000$) and the parts (50000$) this is a very good alternative !

lol 100k track car and you have single piston brakes in front and back. fail.

It's not a fail that much, on our race cars we run stock 2 piston brake calipers with performance friction pads and floating discs and you'd be surprised how much stopping power we have. For example: at Mosport we start braking for turn 8 at 220-223km/h and we never had an issue with stock brakes.

Just clearing things up here !

Take a car, ANY car and build it from scratch to be competitive the first year in CTCC (not even Grand Am or anything else), then bring us the stack of invoices.

$98K is pretty damn cheap.
