english. always. we live in Canada.
Official bilingualism should not be confused with personal bilingualism, which is the capacity of a person to speak two languages. This distinction was articulated in the 1967 report of the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism, which stated:
A bilingual country is not one where all the inhabitants necessarily have to speak two languages; rather it is a country where the principal public and private institutions must provide services in two languages to the citizens, the vast majority of whom may well be unilingual.
I get your point.
Best of both world ?
Jusqu'à maintenant le thread est resté clean, keep it that way !
I always respond in the language they approach with unless its service that I employ (insurance, bank, etc etc) then I expect to be served in my mother tongue. But with my insurance especially they can't understand a single word of english so I speak french.

Except writing. I don't write french, its not worth the effort.
Why not just accommodate others; this mentality will allow you to learn different languages (benefiting yourself in the end), practice those that you aren't perfect at and be less frustrated at the world for stupidity.
