It's not too often that cars go into the catch fences. The tire with suspension still attached ended up in the stands

Why is everybody so surprised? It's a chain linked fence that's probably 15 years old.

It's a couple of years old. They changed it after the incident at Talladega a few years ago. It's chain link but the actual "catch fence" are the cables which keep the car out. As I said these incidents don't happen to often but NASCAR should mandate tethers for the front suspension

I'm surprised they don't have a sort of tether already

If Nascar was regulated by the FIA, the sport would be shut down straight.

Meh strange events still happen at FIA certified tracks. No motorsport is immune from strange events. Newer speedways do have buffer zones between the fence and fans, actually Daytona is renovating in the next few years.

This the wreck that caused NASCAR to start using re stricter plates.

Back then the catch fence was exactly that. A fence.

This is Geoff Bodines Crash from 2000

Carl Edwards 2009

The newer style fence with arrestor cables, the chainlink gives but the cables keep the car out of the stands.

The worst was Kenny Bracks crash at Texas

MRN is reporting 28 injured. 2 severe 1 with life threatening injuries

I bet NASCAR has called all the lawyers in tonight
