powaaaa
With all the trash talk in Supra thread, I have to share my project
My turn…
Why night project? Because my job keeps me busy during the day and I have a 5month old son. The only time I have to work on my bike is when he is sleeping at night... but god I love him so much (but this is another story).
I bought this 2001 996 last winter with 6250mi from a friend, it wasn’t plated in the last 3 years or so.
Bike was a biposto with some goodies
- Carbon airbox
- Carbon front fender (vented)
- Arrow 45mm slip on
- Half carbon clutch cover
- Carbon heel guards
- He deleted the plate light and rear flasher. He tie-rap the plate so he could get rid of the tail
- Tinted windshield
- and few small bits
Everything else was stock.
I bought a 996 because I was told that this is one of the bikes that give you the most feedback. It is not the fastest and not the easiest to drive. But probably the prettiest motorcycle ever made. I was sold for the make and model.
The belts were replaced in 2010 or so. I flush the unused 4yr old oil & filter. Reading this forum, I realized that the fuel leaks were a common problem. So I replaced the fuel filter, replaced fuel quick connect for metal, fuel sender nut as preventive maintenance. I also refreshed the brake fluid and bought a lithium Shorai battery. The rest was in good condition, so I run the bike as is for a few weeks. Then, I installed a monoposto seat with a LED brake light (with flasher integrated). I enjoyed everything of it.
I thought that buying a superbike would hold me away from mods. God I was wrong!
So this was just the beginning of a love story. I know I could get a faster bike for the same money (invested/wasted depending on the point of view). But THIS is the bike I wanted, and nothing else.
I accumulated a few parts already, but this is an ongoing project. Updates might not be as frequent as I would like, but hopefully the bike will be back on the road for April 2015.
I “accidentally” got my hands on a 1098 engine
I also came across theses
- Ohlins steering damper
- Termi slip on
- Stock 1098 headers, but I removed the exhaust valve and plug it. I sanded blast the whole thing as there were a few scratch.
- Brembo rear master (black)
- Brembo RCS19 brake master
- Woodcraft black clip on
- Renthal grip G148
- Aluminium subframe
- Monoposto seat (from 996 SPS with numberplate)
- Aluminium water overflow tank
- Special ECU chip to run OEM loom with new motor
and a few small other things
I wanted to upgrade the front fork as well. After reading lots of reviews, I read that OEM Ohlins are overpriced as I would have to rebuild/upgrade them anyway. So I bought a set of Showa forks from a 2008 848 EVO.
I am also thinking of powdercoating the frame & accessories black. I have also few other idea, but I’ll start with this.
I used to build bicycle, I really enjoy every single details. I was also a weight weenie, so I will most likely keep track of the weight of every component and compare it with stock.
