Lightweight Camping Trailer I designed

Oh damn, didn't know it have to be standing up. thanks! Are you sure it has to be ventilated? Most campers have storage containers for batteries / propane with lids that are pretty closed off, normally located on the fork. I wasn't happy with the way the trailer would look with one of those containers, but safety comes first.

Well propane tank is not next to you when you sleep in those containers .

Thats my main concern ... And to be fairly honest . Thats a thing that will make me not buy the trailers . Sleeping next too a propane tank ... not sure about that. I would pull it off on the back Maybe on a slinding rack to put it on the side when you park to take a shower

I'm pretty sure, if the tank is inside a vehicle... it must be vented to the atmosphere to prevent any gaz pocket that could be ignited by an electrical spark, open flame or static electricity discharge (wich is very important on a moving vehicle isolated from the ground by rubber tires!).
(Don't put it behind the rear bumper... that's why everyone put them on the fork, even though it looks bad).
(This means that they must be standing up)

Propane is pretty serious stuff. Standards and tight regulations apply... Do it right the first time or you'll face major problems somewhere down the road. I really mean to help you by telling it while you are still in the design phase.

I guess I won't be doing that then.

http://www.roulottesprolite.com/eco/specifications.htm

Thx for feeback broody. I actually won the prize for Best Technical Development, and all my professors have told me this might be the most ready-for-market project they've seen in 15 years.

As for the color, the theme of our vernissage was "Design for a Sustainable Society". All our projects dealt with sustainable living, so I wanted to incorporate that into my project by using green as my primary color. As for the purple, its my favorite color, and green and purple are complimentary colors. I'm actually very interested in color and try to use as much color in my designs as I can for semantics. I didn't want to paint the whole trailer, as paint is not sustainable at all, I chose for clear coated aluminum to celebrate my material choices.. but I happen to really like the colors, and I will always use flashy colors in my designs.. nothing you or anyone can tell me to change that. I wear colorful clothing, I like colorful flashy designs. I felt those colors represented nature well.

As for the wheels, again I didn't design them. I found 14" wheels on grabcad, and was happy enough with their design to use them for rendering.. as so much tire is visible from the rear, I needed a proper CAD of wheel / tire combo. If I had the time I would have definitely designed my own wheels, again.. time constraints.

Using green as a "green" color is called greenwashing since it's only a marketing thing, it doesn't make the product any more sustainable. And you could use "deeper" colors than almost fluo. The colors (matte green and cream/white) on your prototype look better than those on the render imo. For the wheels, I think that some old school steelies (like those on old mercedes or beetles, with a colored center cap) could fit the design well and add a subtle touch of color. I don't know if any manufacturer still makes that kind of "premium" steelies though.

If a propane tank blows up, whether its inside or slighty outside it'll still do some serious damage.. but I agree with you, sometimes its not about how safe it truly is, but how safe the user feels that will make a break the sale. Thank you for your honest feedback!

Awesome, thank you for looking into it! If I revisit the project one day I most certainly would have to design a container up front over the fork to store battery / propane, maybe make it large enough for storing camping gear, chairs, etc.. thank you! :)

I didn't design anything worth filing for a patent. If someone really wants to steal my design, my school will protect me and go to court for me. It's happened in the past where a student's work was stolen and the school protected the project. If someone wants to copy my look, or whatever.. I'd much rather they contact me and I'll gladly help them, as the beauty of my project is all the dirty work, the 4 extruded corner posts and the way I designed them to incorporate the lift system and stabilizer jacks, by minimizing parts, etc.. thats what really makes my project special. Here's a video of a test model I made for the telescopic lift system for those interested, pretty cool

Yeah I looked at the Prolite campers and even contacted them to ask some questions, they never got back to me lol. I agree my price point would have to be $8000-9000. The Prolite Eco 12 is crazy light, but I really don't like the fit and finish at all.

Green was used for semantics, the trailer produces its own energy, minimizes / re-uses grey water, it uses less gasoline, its designed to outdoors in nature. Green absolutely is an appropriate color. Deeper greens like forrest green? Absolutely boring, I strongly disagree with you. Why would I use "metal" colors for my rotomolded plastic parts when I can introduce a little flash and spice up the design? Like I said, I'm into fashion, I'm always checking out the new pantone color guides, and my Lamborghini will always be lime green or orange.

The other color combo I was flirting with was the Le Mans Gulf car color scheme, powder blue and orange.. but settled on bright green and purple.

Up to you then, but you could have done 2-3 variants of colors so that people who don't like your flashy colors can imagine the trailer in more classical colors.

Keyshot is also a really nice and user-friendly rendering tool, pretty much plug and play from a solidworks assembly with the plug-in.

I actually like that idea, definitely a feasible option.

Nice project! I would not worry about the patent, if a company want it, they will buy to you and skip the R&D...

My uncle build that one, pretty clever one, based on a plan he bought online (foldavan)
