Recently, I had the "opportunity" to go for an inspection.

I was without my car for two weeks, trying to figure out what was wrong with my car, going to three different certified mechanics along the way, spending fair sums of money. Please, for your sake, read the knowledge that I have acquired and share it with any friend/family who has to go for an inspection.

Do NOT go to CAA to have your car inspected! Here are my reasons why;

1) SERVICE

It's terrible. It mimmicks a true government agency. The people behind the counter are unreceptive and passive, often ignoring what you have to say, or putting their tuna sandwich before your needs.

2) Waiting Time

It took at least an hour every time I had the pleasure of going there. Three hours one time.

3) They Are Too Detailed!

Ask someone who's been there. I've heard stories everywhere I go about some of the things they have failed at an inspection, which has no relevance to the safety of the vehicle.

Someone mentioned a stock spare tire wasn't approved in a thread around here.

4) No Explanation

Service isn't only insignificant when you walk in the door. Firstly, you never speak to the mechanic who verifies your car. The mechanic tells the receptionist briefly, who then tells you the list in a hurry. So, the mechanic tells the receptionist half the story, who tells you half of a half. Get where I'm going with this?

Me: But sir, why did my HID's fail? The bulb is from a Subaru STI?
CAA: Don't know. Stock would pass.

5) Elevated Costs

The price of inspecting your car at CAA is greater than the average. Therefore, you can use the extra money, and put it into gas or towing to go somewhere else. My suggestion?

This place:

Pharand Autos et Camions
200, Boulevard Harwood
Vaudreuil - Dorion, QC J7V 1Y2

Firstly, you walk in the door and are greated with a smilling receptionist. They are happy to help you, and they were able to get my car to the mechanic in 10 minutes and me out the door in 20 minutes.

They are knowledgeable of aftermarket parts, and are able to detect if they are DOT approved, or safe for road use. They passed the same HID's that CAA failed three times.

My car passed the inspection there, but I saw someone fail with a Sunfire in front of me. The mechanic approached the man, and went through the list. He even told him what was most likely broken, and how his mechanic or he should approach the situation.

For instance:
Pharand: "A bracket on your muffler is broken, but it shouldn't cost more than $20 at a garage to have a new one welded on". Or, "Your mirror is loose, but you can take off this panel and check if all the screws are there". He went through every item on the list in this fashion, giving the client the necessary time to write everything down.

All in all, many cars pass the inspection at CAA. I'm sure mine would have too, if it was new from the dealer. Their biggest shortfall is not explaining the repairs, due to a lack of direct communication to the mechanic. I almost spent $400 on stock headlights, because I couldn't get my HID's to pass and nobody knew why.

Many thanks to ABD performance for pointing me to Pharand Auto. If not, who knows how long it would've been before getting my car back on the road.

Yeah Pharand is a good place to go. I Got my saaq inspection there. Failed the first time but passed the second. Good people to deal with

CAA inspection center at the end of des sources failed my old tercel I got from ontario because the brakes "worked TOO well". I asked him what that meant, since I just changed pads/rotors/calipers infront and shoes/drums in the rear when I left ontario only 600km ago (all highway at that lol). He said maybe I used cheap parts...and that was the most of the explanation he was willing to offer....and he wouldn't let me leave the lot with my car, and threatened to call the police if I did since I was a safety hazard. I got it towed to a garage down the street, they did a roadtest and a quick check and a bill for $75 that said my brakes were good. I went back down the street to the inspection center, expecting them to check again but instead they looked at the bill from the garage, and said ok its fine now and proceeded to pass me without having actually touched or seen the car again...but charged me another $6 for a second inspection....

Never again

Then why are inspection threads being posted here on a daily basis? Just trying to help fellow MRers

Posting a question on why you get an inspection is relevent to this section.
Posting on the kind of service you get is not.
It as nothing to do witht the HSC

Also, posting this in the general section would reach many much users whom dont come in this section
My 2 cents.

2cents dropped and kicked to your face

I had the opportunity to visit a CAA garage for inspection last automn. People were polite and very nice with me.

It took me the time of the inspection: 45 minutes. And only one time, my car was clean and on order.

They have a list to follow. When your spare tire or your battery are not properly attached, it is a question of security in case of crash (Heavy Flying objects).

I was allowed to go in the garage and spoke with the mechanic.

I shopped before going for the inspection. CAA was the cheapest.

^im glad to hear you had a positive experiene.

Although, I believe that the majority of us who have gone there have found it to be a mediocre experience at best.

First time I read about somebody complaining.

Do you have any statistics ?

Personally I was very dissatisified with the service at the CAA inspection centre at Autoroute 20 / Des Sources

I was however very satisfied with the service at the "Chartrand" inspection centre at A440/A25/Montee Masson in Laval.

Open a thread with a poll or add one in here. You'll get your stats pretty quickly.

I got a car inspected there before buying it. Got to talk to the mech. Leaking head, tranny, busted rear drums, some battery leaking issue or I don't remember what... but since it was a voluntary inspection (not a 24-48h thing), they let the car go like that... Great. Gotta admit it is over priced. 160$ for an inspection? Plus, in my experience, guy at desk was really shitty and too busy with his sandwich/lunch for his own good.

To OP: I'm guessing this Pharand placed is CAA approved or whatnot? In the sense that they can make my car road legal if it has to pass inspection?
