Hi guys,

After the last discussion about home-made octance boosters, I came across a similar thread on the evolutionm.net forum. Someone posted this link to a FAQ from the Australian BP website:

http://www.bp.com.au/products/fuelnews/faq.asp#1

Look at question 2 of the FAQ. It looks like British Petrol officially recommends use of toluene as an octane booster. Convinced?

4. When did the government phase out leaded petrol?

Leaded petrol was replaced by the Lead Replacement Petrol in Western Australia on the 1st January 2000. Queensland was supplied Lead Replacement Petrol from July 2000 by BP. Other states have since followed, with national legislation taking effect from the 1st January 2002.
they where up to resently....

I think Chuck-s4 has used that method or it could be another member of the board.

Yes... I did a lot of quantitative research with VAG-COM (a software) to see the effectivess of boosting Octane on my car (since my car beneficiate a lot from Octane boost since it is turbo.).

Basically, Octane Booster for N/A cars are in 99% of the case useless since most ECU Chip won't adapt and won't retard the ignition timing. If it does, you may gain a bit.

Octane Boost you buy at Canadian Tire did raise my Octane by 0.3 per bootle on a 20-liter full tank... So it's money thrown out the window.

Best mix is:
a) a mix of 50% Petro-Canada 94 and 50% of VP Fuel 103 Race Unleaded... Gives approx 99 of Octane...
b) a mix of 80-90% Petro-Canada 94 and 10-20% C16/Toluene/Xylene... Disadvantage is that this is leaded and will ****5/$ your cat. if you're using it too often... But it's cheaper than a) ...

How is Toluene or Xylene leaded?

They're aromatics. Or is lead added to it for 'flavour' ?

No. C16 has. Xylene alone isn't really good according to some people, it would melt the plastic in your fuel lines... Eatsviperforlunch could possibly know more about it. Toluene is fine.

That's what I thought. Probably mis-read you.

Well the difference between Xylene and Toluene is 1 methyl group (at position 2,3 or 4 - hence ortho/meta/para Xylene).

I'll go look at the effects of Xylene (o,m,p) with plastic. Or at least try to.

est ce que quelqu'un sais ou on peut trouver du toluene?
et quel est le prix environ?

is there different quality in paint thinner?
UAP have 20 liters for 26$, is this a good price?

Normally it's all the same thing.

Just be sure, and I mean certain, that you are strictly getting Toluene/Xylene. and NOTHING else.

I'd buy a small sample and run it through an NMR, best way to know.
