Ok guys. I think everyone that has been on here for more than a week is sick of seeing the same threads over and over again so I thought we could make a sticky which answers most of these questions.

1- A format should be kept. Question in the subject box, with answer following.

2- Be absolutely sure of your answer. No ifs and I've heard that's, I think so's in here.

3- Don't post anything else than questions and answers. Please avoid having conversation in this thread. It's purely informational. If there is a mistake in the post, please contact the member by pm.

4- Keep it to mk3's in this thread. Feel free to start another mk1, mk2, and mk4 thread.

5- If a shop could post rough estimates of engine swaps, don't think it needs to be exact, but a range should do the job. ie. vr6 swap 5 to 6k...

What does mk mean?

mk stands for the generation of volkswagen you own. it's an abbreviation of the word mark.

mk1: 1975 to 1984
mk2: 1985 to 1992
mk3: 1993 to 1999.5
mk4: 1999.5 to present
 
I have a golf/jetta, what is my bolt pattern?

If you have 4 bolts, your bolt pattern is 4x100.

mk1, mk2, and mk3 4 cylinder cars are 4 bolts.

If you have 5 bolts, your bolt pattern is 5x100.

mk3 vr6's and mk4's are 5 bolt.
 
I have a mk3, what size tires do I need?

14": 195-60/14
15": 205-50/15
16": 205-45/16
17": 205-40/17

Note that these are ideal sizes that are closest to stock.
 
What do I need to swap front ends?

If you want to swap golf/jetta front ends, all you need is the following:

- hood
- lights
- grille

There is no need to swap fenders, bumpers, or rad supports.
 
which engines came in MK3?

1.8L 8v 90HP/105TQ ACC Mono-Motronic

The Mk3 Vr6 has 172 hp.
 
What different trims are available?

Jetta Trims:

1.8 8v: CL
2.0 8v: GL, GLS, GT, Trek, Wolfsburg, and K2
VR6: GLX


Golf Trims:

1.8 8v: CL
2.0 8v: GL

GTI Trims:

2.0 8v: GTI
VR6: GTI GLX

(note: I am missing the trims for the diesels, I don't know much about diesels! :p feel free to add a diesels post!)

What's the difference between a GT and GL?

There are a few different things on the GT. Basically it can be seen as a 2.0 GTI equivalent for the Jetta.

It has 4 wheel disk brakes, amplified roof mounted antennae, sport cloth seats, fog lights, silver gauge cluster, sideskirts, smoked taillights, and came stock with 14" mags and spoiler.

Many people think it has a different suspension, but that is not the case. It has the same suspension as the other 2.0 8v models.

on the GL trims, you have the TD engine, 97-98 Jetta has a GLS TDI if I remember correctly.

The GT has black mirror cases. The only Jetta's and Golfs with colored mirror cases were the Vr6 and the Wolfsburgs. And I'm not sure about the polished exhaust tips, may have been an option.

You forgot that the GT comes with the fog lights and Silver gauge cluster
