Pentax had far better lenses while Canon had better cameras.... but this is changine nowadays. For what it's worth I have a pentax K20d. Before it I had a K100d and before that I had a silver *ist DL.

The *ist DL is an excellent camera.
+The photo quality far exceeds what the Canons of the era were capable of.
+Focus is very accurate
+Ergonomics are exceptional
+Viewfinder is best in class (pentamirror)
+Build quality is the best you'll find.
-Focus is slow in low light (very fast and accurate in daylight)
-No stabilization

When buying a DSLR, you're buying into a system.

Pentax:
* Generally great image quality
* Conservative exposure system (images generally 1/3-1/2 stop underexposed, to preserve highlights)
* In-body shake reduction (works with any lens)
* Any pentax lens made since the late 1940s works, and has shake reduction
* Excellent quality, fast prime lenses available (they're gems, I swear)
* waterproof cameras and zoom lenses available
* Low-light AF has improved steadily over the years, however it is still not as good as Canon's. However it is very usable.

In my opinion, the choice is between Pentax and Nikon. It depends on your needs.
