I am driving around in an automatic 328IS.

What the hell is:

1) The A/M switch next to the gear shifter. When you hit M it seems to accelerate twice as slow (like a burnt clutch or something)

2) Check button

3) 1/10/100/1000 buttons

4) Memo buttons

Thanks

The A/M button is to switch between "automatic" and "manual" modes. Basically, you keep it in the A position most of the time. When you put it in "manual" mode, the transmission locks in the gear you select with the lever, D being the 4th.

It's useful in the snow or when getting down or up a steep hill.

The memo button will make your clock beep every 59th minute of an hour (lick the electronic wrist watches) just to let you know the hour is changing.

the 1/10/100/1000 button is to be used with the trip computer. It allows you to change options (check the owners manual).

I have no idea what the check button is. Where is it?

Hope this helps.
