Any idea if the car has had all it's maintence done ??
-This could be the difference between a reliable car and one that's going to break down on every street corner
Honestly they are not bad cars, as long as the price is right !
They make great low-buck transportation devices.
I've had 2 '93 escorts and have not had any real bad experiences with either of them...
I was averaging about 500 km's to a tank of fuel with moderate daily driving, which is a mix of city and hwy , and actually did about 650 to a tank when taking it easy and going on long vacations with my wago !
The 1.9l Ford motors in my opinion are un-killable, neither of mine used any oil to speak of and allways started well in winter . Most of the maintence parts on these cars are dirt cheap (like most domestics) and can be bought just about anywhere .
What I would look out for would be loosness in the front end (tie-rod and/or ball joints about 35$ bucks each ) , noisy from the rear suspension during test drive (possibly broken rear springs $150 for jobber set + install) and the only other real problem would be rust around the rear fenders and below the rocker-panels .....
- perhaps check to see when the timming belt was last changed ($40. plus inst) btw; it's a non-resistance engine, so if it does break , the motor will just shut down, therefore no valve damages should occur ...
Happy hunting !
**edit , sorry I just realised the thread was in french , no offence .
