mpeg movies

I need help. I just got a video camera and I wanna tape some of the events and other stuff. My camera can make mpeg movies but only 60 seconds long. How can I convert a normal movie on the cameras casette to a mpeg movie ? I know it can be done but I have no clue how. I really wanna tape the next "ice race".
So if you know how, PLEASE help me out...

I want to be able to put them on the net also, I just need to know how to get the normal movies onto my computer..

which camera do you have. some of the newer ones have fire wire support. like the mini jvc. or else i think you can get a tv tuner for your comp. you can hook up the camera to the comp. make the comp record whats on the camera then convert to whatever format you want it. not sure never tried recording off a regular recorder.

ya but not only jvc. My uncle has a sony that he bought i think 4 yrs ago that has firewire!!
