CAMs on ABA Engines

I currently have a TT 266deg cam with P&P, chip, intake and exhaust. I am wondering if slapping in a 276deg Neuspeed cam will be a marked improvement.
(ABA = '93-up 2.0 crossflow)

Anyone have experience (good or bad) with Neuspeed cams?
What about duration, is 276 going too far, cuz 266 still seems mild to me.

I'm currently running an ABA block with the 1.8l head on my car with an Autotech 270 hydro cam, and I must say that the cam is pretty good. I've heard from many people that the Autotech and the Neuspeed 272 are pretty much the same, but that the Autotech doesn't last as long. With the 276, my guess is that your gonna get a lumpy idle, lose a bit of low-end, but probably gain it in the top-end (logically). As far as improvement, I can't really tell you how much of a difference it's gonna make. Try talking to vrsik, his bro has an ABA with the 276, if I'm not mistaken. Also, are you running an OBDI or OBDII ??? The OBDII doesn't like to be modified cuz of the whole pollution control crap. If it is an OBDII, expect your car to run really ****ty on idle, even stall frequently...The problem can be fixed, but $$$$$. If you're running OBDI, then you shouldn't have a problem. I say go for it, if the price is right of course, the 276 shouldn't be too agressive and the car should retain its drivability...
That's my 0,02$...

the best cam for that engine and mid to high rev power (from OUR 2.0 crossflow program testing) is the 272 Cat Cams...be carefull about advertised duration, get the full tech infos on them before buying your next set: advertise duration, duration, lift at 0.5, lobe profile if possible, degree etc...

I had a 272 in my old jetta 2.0 with a neuspeed chip I/E and AUG tranny..I ran a 15.9 on 17"! It was a quick car!

15.9 on a Jetta?

Thats awesome. Best I've done on my TT 266deg, unchipped, P&P was 16.3 with my crappy 14" all season tires.

The neuspeed chip made a HUGE difference, so I really cant wait for next summer to go back to Napierville.

btw, 87jetta8v, I have head of many people puting on the 1.8L head on the 2L tallblock. How did this affect performance? From what I've heard it increases compression but you lose power anyways due to poor flow.
What about the 16v 2.0 head, does that fit?

i figure a good thing to do is change the ratio
of the final drive to a 3.94...
the only thing is those 2L crossflow tranny's we're built
for just everyday crusing. if you can get a 84 GTi diff and swap it in there, it'll fly.

i would keep the lower duration cam in. this guy i work with had a 84 GTi with no cam, 3.94, and a P&P and this thing BLASTS out of the hole; like retardedly. can hop anyone if he had good tires.

sick!

I'm totally with you on the Mk1 which was light crazy...on the Mk3 the 2.0 is a dead engine that doesn't rev at all (compare to the old 1.8 GTI) and duration is needed to achieve power on top.But a higher final drive is more then welcome on the Mk3.

i'll put a GIAC chip before a "NEUR SPEED" chip in my car!!!!!
For sure and on top of that it's fully reprogrammable the GIAC

Well GLXVR6, there are still a few bugs to work out of the system, but all I can say is that up to now, I'm very pleased with it. Compared to my old 1.8, this engine has way more torque and it pulls pretty well through the whole powerband. But, like I said, some things have to be worked out, so I'll give you a more definite answer pretty soon...As for loosing power, I'm assuming you're refering to keeping the 2l head compared to putting the 1.8... Good question, I've never had the chance to drive a slightly modded 2l crossflow before, so can't help you there. the reason I kept the 1.8 head was because 1) of the $$$ factor and 2) the CIS system is easier to tune. That's my opinion anyway....

The 276 will work very will with an engine that has the increased flow capacity of a good port and polish job. For a non p+ped engine I would do either a Neuspeed 268 or Autotech 270.

Forgot to mention, a 1.8 head on a 2l block will give you higher compression right off the bat, so if you're running a shaved head like me (I know, I know, bad move...), your comp ratio will skyrocket !!!! As for the 16v question, yes you can run a 16v head on a 2l ABA block (as mentioned by rainnman), but don't run a 1.8 head on a 2l 16v block !!! That will give you an insane comp ratio, and I think that there's also a clearance issue (piston-valve) but someone else might be able to enlighten you on that subject.

btw, 87jetta8v,
how is you car running, when I met you at Tim's you said that you needed a certain amount of mileage before you could kick it.

Be careful if the car is an OBDII as the lumpy idle can set off an engine code (misfire). You may also have to pierce a small hole in the TB so the idle control valve does not freak out.

JAP, why the 180 degree turn?

Well 12 inch, the car runs pretty good now. I only have a small distributor problem that I'll explain to you next time I see you. I have a hard time explaining it face to face, so imagine on the computer.... But it still pulls like a bi/ch (for an 8v, of course)

Well guys, I had to get it. Yup, the Neuspeed 276° cam from RMR, it was on liquidation for $300.

What can I say, ITS FU$#IN' AWESOME. After having reset my ECM the car pulls like mad and sounds like a honda on the intake end (ie: loud and high piched) while still maintaining the usual 2.0 deep gurgle from the exhaust. as for the idle, its actually still very good. It is obvious but not annoying and my car starts fine even in cold weather (like today).

Now I know I need closer gear ratios. What should I change, 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th? or change the final drive ratio and then put a longer 5th? What tranny should I use to find these gears?

Change either your whole tranny or your diff & final drive just like the others were saying... Your not rebuilding any tranny in my driveway!! :)

Let's get some more details on what tranny options exist for the 8v ABA, as well as final drives... Technically speaking how bad is it to change the final drive... I think we're more looking into just getting a tranny that has shorter gears off the bat...

Diff. from a TDI would be nice. I think rainman was running that on the VR6 race car. Steph, you out there?
