I was driving the golf today and I have to say it's kinda fun (even with no radio). When I think about it, the car is really a piece of crap (no offense to VW guys) but still fun to drive. I think the main reason is that my friend who introduced me to the car scene back in 1995 had an 85 GTI in mint condition. I thought this guy was GOD!!! I was on top of the world as long as I wan in his car. It had a great paintjob (cherry black), 14inch TSW Stealths, recaro seats and a killer sound system. Not much by today's standards but damn it was cool back then. I picture my golf being like his and I love it.

Enough ranting.....

You know what you could do? sell they Type-R and build up your golf... IMO, you'd have a much nicer car, but that's just me!

Actually Danny, you should leave the ITR stock, its a collectible, and build up a VW. Youll find that they are quite easy to make fast for relatively cheap.

I say it's cheaper to build a fast Honda. Just a 90 91 civic with a B18C1 swap should give you very low 14 sec runs and all that for not much $$$. Just think about it, a VR swap is much more expensive than a GSR swap and not quite as fast.

.2 or .3 seconds slower maybe on the quarter, but even my heavy ass passat can smoke a b16a 90 civic hatch on the hwy with ease. Imagine how a 90 golf would just eat the honda hybrid!

For the "all around" performance and imho the "better" look of the golf....the Vr swapped mk2 kills it!

Well whe can't really talk about the look because that's a very personnal thing but for performance, your right a VR would be stronger on the highway but the GSR swap would eat the VR on the 1320 for sure and by much more than .2 or .3 secs. I've never seen mid 14 sec golfs with VR swap, the only ones I've seen always run low 15s high 14s. I could take any VR swap on the 1322 with my old B16 91 hatch no prob but on the highway it's a different thing. It depends where you want to have fun, I rather have fast 1320 times than top speed power.

The Average quarter mile times for a mk2 vr is about 14.6! Ask any Dubber!
A balance between both i think is the best!

A stock 93-99 gti vr6 "should" run 15.0-15.4! Minus a couple hundred pounds!

And what about trap speeds? There is always a big diffrence there between VW and Honda!

But you are right..it is cheaper to build a fast honda!

Yes but how many A2 golfs with VR swaps stock do you see running the 1320 in 14.60 seconds. I've never seen one, they always run 14.90 and up. For the A3 VR6, that's the same times than a stock GSR runs but I've never seen a stock A3 golf VR6 run those numbers, usually I see them run 15.50s. But I don't want to start a war with you because I like both cars and I think both cars have their strong points. A honda is strong on the 1320 and a VW is strong on the highway so lets just leave it at that. And whe should not forget that the drivers skill is very important also and should be taken into consideration. Lets just say both are nice cars and both have potential to go fast and both can be driven very badly to make them out to be slow.

Sounds good to me! ;)

When people start to buy Vw's and build them up more and more..people will develop more skill! It's the fact that there are so many Good honda drivers!

My friend with the Yellow GTI (always at napi) runs consistant 15.2-.3! Full interiour (spare and everything)

I run 15.7@93.2 and I weigh MUCH more than a GTI!

So how's the car search going?

A driver can make the car... serious, if you have a car with potential and you can't drive for $hit....then why even bother??

that's me right now !!! lol but practice makes perfect !!

Why does everyone assume the VR swap is the only thing to do to a VW? Anyone remember the 16v? It was being modded long before the VR.

Yes ILS, your car has potential, all you need now is a Garret chip and you'll be all set....

Jay, the V6 has alot more torque to start off with then a 2L...so, it's a pretty good base, no?? Even if it weighs 200lbs more, the starting power is there...

I would like to build the VW but my future plans are for a civic drag car (sorry VW guys). I'll keep the Type R relatively stock because as MK1 said it's rare. I would like to fix up the VW to look nice but as for a VR swap, I don't think it will happen. I wouldn't mind having a GTI 16V but I'd feel bad driving it in the winter because they, too are collectors items I find. Best thing to do is fix the stock golf to look and handle well and call it a day.

Granted the starting power is there, but I would rather have a built 16v over a VR6. I personally dont feel that the VR6 belonged in that body style.(in an mkII) Ultimately, the 1.8t would be my first choice, but its a little pricey.

1.8t is almost as heavy as a VR6 and Way more of a hassle! I know the reason why you would want 1.8t in an Mk2 (or mk1) but if Weight is a problem, then it's no better than a Vr!

Bencamo...how's the Pick-up doing?

danny Itr , you have a killer ride with the type R , If i were you i'd fix up the golf nice and simple interior etc... and you've got 2 cool rides.
