Wayne Gerdes, the professional driver who invented the term hypermiling, recently got behind the wheel of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and drove it across the country on two tanks of gas.

To complete the hypermilling challenge, Gerdes drove the Sonata Hybrid from San Diego, CA all the way to the other side of the country to Jekyll Island, Georgia a trip that was almost 2,300 miles. Gerdes managed to only stop for gas once, 1,200 miles into the trip. After fueling up he managed to complete the trip to Georgia with 2.5 gallons of gas still in the tank. In total he used a total of 38 gallons of gas and averaged 60 mpg. Hyundai claims that the Sonata is capable of traveling up to 700 miles on a single tank.

"As a fan of fuel-efficient vehicles, I enjoy the challenge of putting new technology to the test," said Gerdes after finishing the 2,300 mile trip. "This demonstration shows how the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid can deliver extremely impressive fuel economy and range for drivers who value fuel savings. This is the first time I've driven a car that 'does it right!'"

Another thumbs up for Hyundai.

EPA tested it to 40MPG...

I still really don't get it... who would buy that 35-40k hyundai that makes 40-60mpg when you can get a TDI that does just the same for 25k... and will not require any major services for 500,000 km.

Hyundai have huge depreciation... when it gets the time to replace the batteries, the car will be worth nothing and it's gonna go to garbage. After what? 5 years?

People are so ignorant about hybrids, it's incredible.

First off, hybrids pretty much all come with an 8-10 year warranty on the batteries, second, if you pass that time and the batteries need replacement, they don't all get replaced at ones, the faulty cells can be changed separately.

Next, not everyone wants a clangy diesel. Yes, they are quieter then thye used to be, but nothing like a gas-hybrid which is dead quiet at all speeds.

Also, hybrids require a lot less maintenance then a normal car. The brakes will last a lot longer, the hybrid system never needs maintenance and vehicles like the Prius have no drive belts to be replaced, ever.

Finally, the equipment you get in a 25k TDI and in a 40k hybrid is NOWHERE THE SAME. A fully loaded Camry Hybrid has leather, sunroof, navigation, dual auto climate, etc and it costs 35k. A base Prius is only a little more then 25k and you get the same or more equipment and more room then a base Golf TDI.

Thanks for schooling me on hybrid... I guess alternative technologies are not known enough by the public and could benefit from schooling people on them.

Still, I'd get a TDI just because it's more powerfull... and german! Prius are slow... and the lack of sound drives me crazy. (friends in the US have one and it's boring as hell)

A 30k Jetta TDI will get you leather, sunroof, nav, bluetooth and a lot of room (new Jetta is a lot bigger)

I guess Toyota and Honda can sell pricey hybrid, but Hyundai... common...

A Jetta is still a compact....a big one, but still a compact. Interior space is similar to the Elantra so when there will be an Elantra Hybrid that`s when we can compare. For now a Jetta TDI starts at around 24K while a similarly equipped Elantra, at 18. There`s a
5K+tax+interest difference that will take a LOOONG time to get back through the fuel economy.

The Jetta TDI can compare to a Prius, in terms of alternative for fuel efficient vehicle, which is also a compact and it is indeed cheaper that the Prius, especially in the current new cheaper version. But cheaper version also means cheaper everything.

Elantra Hybrid for 18k? No way!

Jetta are cheaper and can now compare to Civic and Corrolas... as before, they offered too much refinement. I guess it's not a bad thing as most people will not even notice they have cheap out on materials.

Yes Hyundai are on the upswing, but the VW Passat Bluetec Diesel did better.

A Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion has recently set a new Guinness World Record for the "longest distance travelled by a standard production passenger car on a single tank of fuel". The trip begun in Maidstone in Kent. The VW headed to the South of France and then turned back, running out of fuel close to Calais after completing a distance of 1,526.63 miles without ever refueling. That's an average of 74.8 miles per gallon (US)!

Hyundai’s all-new 2011 Sonata Hybrid sedan will carry a starting price of $ 25,795 plus a $ 750 fee for freight charges for a total of $ 26,545 when it arrives in the firm’s dealerships in early January.
This is far from a 40K hybrid.

Personally I don't see the benefits with hybrids(apart from being cleaner):
They cost much more to buy then their gas equivalent. But if you consider the difference you pay at the dealer, and the amount you save on gas, the hybrid remains more expensive( I believe le guide de l'auto proved this with the civic)
