Already 3 weeks in (currently in Venice, CA). Decided to create a thread and post pics. Will try to update the thread along the way!

This is the plan (approximately 13,000km):

We (girlfriend and I) are renting a Jeep Commander (will post pics later). Nice truck, with GPS Nav, Sirius radio, ...

1st Stop - Toronto, ON

Nice thread, would be nice to put up the total gas cost/how many fill-ups for the whole trip.

2nd Stop - Chicago, IL

The drive from Toronto to Chicago was long, especially with the 1-hour delay to cross the border. However, Chicago is a beautiful city, much nicer than we expected!

Amazing. I wonder what it will be like in New Orleans, Mobile etc. It might sound stupid but that oil spill is historic and will be remembered for decades so take pics.

Looks like you guys got a great trip planned. Good job avoiding I-70 possibly the worst highway in existence. I did about the same route from MTL to LV.

Watch out for Arizona cops

I'm also wondering how it will be like in New Orleans (we're not stopping in Mobile). I will, of course, take many pics

wow! *tu*
HOly fuck vraiment nice comme plan, exactement comme je voudrais le faire!

looks sick, I would have stopped by Oregon though.

There are many, many more places we would have liked to pass by, but we had to put some limits!

sounds fun!

redbull is your friend!

Haha, the driving is actually not that bad! Oh, and did I mention I'm the only one driving? The girlfriend doesn't have her license yet :run:

couldn't have a diesel truck? would have been better no?

It would have been more economical, but it was already hard to find a reasonable price on a vehicle with unlimited mileage, diesel was impossible to find, or it would have costed more in the end. Gas is cheap here in the states anyway

you pictures are nice

Thanks

I didn't know about I-70! Thanks for the tip *tu*

What do you guys do for lodging? On the fly or reserved ahead of time?

We reserved the first 3-4 weeks before leaving: hotels for cities in which we only stay for a night or 2, and vacation rentals for LA (10 days) and Venice (1 week). Most of the rest of the trip is now booked. The girlfriend is good at finding great hotels (Hilton, Westin, ...) at great prices

Exactly what I wanna do within the next 2 years...

Good luck, and plan in advance, it is a lot of planning :run:

How did you plan your trip? Why did you choose the route you did?

At first we wanted to go to LA and stay in the area for a couple of weeks, and we planned to take the shortest route. But then we thought that if we were to drive 8000km or more, we might as well take a more interesting route. So we started listing all the stuff we wanted to see, made a list of "must see", and planned a route around this.

We left Florida for another trip. And we also left the northern west coast for another time.

So, after Chicago, we stopped in Omaha, NE. Pretty boring city, but we didn't have much choice since there isn't anything very interesting between Chicago and Denver.

We spent 2 nights in Denver so we had time to go to the Rocky Mountains National Park. Amazing views

This is at an elevation of about 11,000ft. on the Trail Ridge Road. The road was still not completely open (they were still plowing the 8-ft of snow left on the road). We still went as far (and as high) as we could. The temperature dropped by about 10 degrees in just a few minutes. The view was spectacular. I had a hard time capturing the view and the feeling from this point of view, my pictures didn't come out as good as I wanted ... I'll see if I can get something decent with some post-processing.
