===============================================================

People with modified vehicles have been experiencing higher than normal police attention this year and I would like to draw attention to the issue. If you have been ticketed unfairly please share your story (with photos if possible) so we can compile a list and possibly bring it to the attention of other media outlets and SPVM itself for a response.

If you are new to the scene, MontrealRacing.com did a similar intervention in 2007 when there was a large crackdown. You can read the two articles on the subject to see how things turned out here:

I was stopped the friday before grandprix weekend in my Audi by 3 police cars at a traffic light in the city's east end.

Everyone thats ever driven with me knows I drive like an old man, I do my stops and follow the speed limits to the T just to avoid headaches, but that day sitting at a red light was enough reason for them to pull me over.

The officer walked up to my car saying SA CONFORME PAS, proceeded to tell me my wheels were rubbing (2 finger gap in the front 3-4 in the rear) as well as ram a tape measure down my exhaust and take pictures of my car. When all was said and done I received a nice stack of tickets as well as the cop told me he was putting a note on my file that I am only allowed to drive the car home and thats it, if its seen elsewhere I will be impounded for 30 days and face several fines ( never heard this before on a 48 hour warning, also refused to give it to me in writing)

By chance I happened to be next to the SAAQ inspection center so I quickly popped in after my ordeal. Spoke to the head inspector and he quickly looked at my car. He stated everything was fine with the car and they were just busting my balls, to come back monday with stock wheels and it should pass. Went back monday morning and passed my inspection with flying colours.

Needless to say this is getting out of hand, its affecting my shop for modified cars, my passion and hobby, and as well as my freinds cars.

I got a ticket for walking 3 feet outside of the painted lines of a cross walk last month. $42 dollars, for waiting for the light to be Green, and the little white man, but oh no... because there was a lot of people and I was walking 3 feet outside of the line... I was jay-walking.

My bro who is a cop explained it best: As a cop, you need to DO something... you can't just sit around.
Most guys, Police included... given the chance to sit around and relax, we WILL!!! So instead of doing real crime prevention, investigations, etc... they sit there with a radar gun, or pull over people with mods and give tickets.
Why?? Because it's EASY, and it allows them to so the bosses that they DID something. Because looking for missing people, keeping the streets clean, busting drug dealers, robbers, and other police work... is too much 'effort'.

What the hell is the cop doing in Danny's picture? Who measures clearance at an angle like that?

Got pulled over for foglights near the Bell Centre as I was getting off the 20, the T at the bottom of that road where you turn left near where the planetarium used to be.

FOGLIGHTS. Didn't get a ticket but the officer warned me to turn them off on the island of Montreal because apparently, you're not allowed foglights in Montreal except on highways.

NOT ALLOWED FOGLIGHTS IN MONTREAL.

They are STOCK FOGLIGHTS ON MY IMPREZA, WITH STOCK NORMAL HALOGEN LIGHTS.

Last time I modded a car it was tinted windows in the rear, not even the front and they harassed me. That was easy 10 years ago.

lol it was more just for the picture. That was at our meeting and he was demonstrating that the tires can't rub.

Was it foggy?

In clear conditions, you must turn off your fogs lights if you're within 150m of another vehicle, or when there is sufficient lighting on the road. Thus, it's almost always illegal to run your foglights in urban areas.

Unless you own a car that comes with fog DRLs, then you're just above the law.

I went out to a photohoot with a friend in the old port and met two cops who were so happy to see a nicely modded MK2 GTI that they spent the better part of 20 minutes taking pictures of the car and talking to us about what mods were done to it. They then drove away and gave thumbs up.

Good guy cops

Got pulled over and got a ticket for having my lateral front windows too dark.
Factory tinted and the law was in place when the car was sold to the first buyer.
I got my A4 5 years ago and it was a lease return. it's a 2006.
Cop used his little machine to measure darkness, said i was 5% too high. windows were dirty and he didn't even wash the spot were he verified. I think it was very exagerated.
This was the only time in 5 years I have been bothered for this. happened a couple months ago.

But never said anything about being too low or aftermarket exhaust or sound or whatever...

Anyways here is a picture. you can easily see dash and stearing wheel. this was when i first bought it.

Fog light DRL's are okay because of the low output. Transport Canada has a limit of 7000 axial candela, which is a fraction of the intensity of a fog lamp running at full intensity.

Honestly, the only 'run in' I ever had while driving a modified car was the following:
Back in '05 I had a lightly modified MKIII Golf. I was entering a Tim Hortons parking lot and 'aggressively' turned into the lot while a cop was driving in the same lot, in the opposite direction.
He pulled up next to me and said 'eille s'pa parce que t'as un volant de course que tu peux conduire de meme'... He then drove off.

I got stopped by Mr.Drolet in my 3/3 and otherwise stock S10(sold, ti-coune owns/vga'd it). He pulled me over and greeted me by saying "ton exhaust est non-conform". My exhaust was stock and mint with just surface rust in the cat area. So despite this and him looking it over he still made me start up my truck and rev it. Once it was determined that he couldn't get shit from my exhaust, and when I was done rofling, he started checking everything else. Lights, tires, bumpers, body, all in spec. Then he asked about the handbrake (foot operated type). I said "idk, never use it" press it, it engages, release, no problem "seems like it works". I was expecting him to try pushing the truck like he has done to everyone else... NOPE!. just walks to his car with my papers. Writes me a ticket for non-functional handbrake.

I ended up contesting it, and won with flying colors. The Judge said it seemed like traits of a very lazy officer, and he seemed very understanding when I said Drolet is known in the community for targeting modified cars.

I don't let it affect me. I still do whatever the fuck I want with my cars. As long as it's done safely and with quality parts, it's an easy win in court. We can't let them win and get us discouraged just because we get thrown in the same category as "civicswappeJDMfullbondo", "yolorottenS13driftEbaypartsyo" and "#lowlevellocalheroswagcambervgaNangkangtires". Don't let them take away your passion.
