Buying a used beetle?

2000 with about 120,000 clicks on a 2.0L.

Ive heard that the too slow is pretty reliable as long as it doesn't catch fire.

What to look for?

Also, are parts (jobber or OEM, don't matter) pricier for this car over a civic, echo, or maybe a camry? (different class for the camry, I know... But good deal).

Look for any residue of racing stickers all over the car before buying it lol

My girlfriend 2 years back was looking for a Beetle 1.8T and we fell upon a nice one for cheap... when we get there he just starts talking to us about it and saying everything seems fine.

At the end he says he seems to find it faster then other beetle gls's he has sold .. i just smirk. He goes inside to get some paperwork or what not and i just look over the car one last time and with the suns glare i realize there is remnants of stickers all over the car ... after further looking i find 2 numbers on each door and some sponsor stickers i take it the car was probably used in beetle cups and was beat to shit.

We found another beetle sometime that week :p

Buying a racing car has nothing wrong, racecars are much better maintained than street cars

It's pretty much a early mk4...that being said, the aeg 2.0 might burn a bit of oil and the axle beam bushings/control arm bushings/sway bar bushings are to be looked at (after 10-11 years they get dry just like mk4s)

I picked one up last year for my girlfriend (green 2000 2.0 manual) and it's doing great...and it has 181 000km on it now.

x2 even if the car was raced, doesn't mean it not in great shape. It can be in much better working condition due to the fact that they rely on it. It's not like it was owned by a ricer kid doing clutch burnouts and winter drifting with it.

Thanks for the quick reply guys, gonna have a look at 2 today.

Cabbet, thanks for the more specific things to look at, that's exactly what I wanted to know.
