According to a new report by La Presse, the federal government will be naming the bridge to replace the champlain after famed Montreal Canadiens hockey player Maurice Richard. They intend to make the announcement on December 9th – to pay homage to Maurice Richard’s retired #9.

Federal minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs Denis Lebel had suggested the name as far back as 2012, indicating that Maurice Richard topped the list of suggestions form Quebecers in every poll. On Friday, however, both Lebel’s and Prime Minsiter Stephen Harper’s offices state that no decision has been made.

Maurice Richard passed away in May of 2000 and was accorded a state funeral – something reserved for people who have profoundly affected the lives of Quebecers. 115,000 people paid homage during the public viewing.

Not everyone is happy with the rumours. Henri Dorion, a former head of the Commission de toponymie du Québec doesn’t believe it’s appropriate for a hockey player to have the same stardom as Samuel de Champlain.

“I don’t believe in naming a structure of such prominence after a hockey player. It’s like saying Maurice Richard was as important as Champlin. M. Richard was important in his domain and I don’t want to minimize contribution to sport but just don’t think it’s appropriate to use his name for such an important piece of the landscape” Mr. Dorion said.

I love the name!

that's honestly awesome

Henri Dorion go fist yourself.

Richard was not just a hockey player, il était l'ambassadeur des Canadiens français.

c'est correct de changer de nom. Maurice Richard c'est une légende. Le pont champlain dans la tête des gens = danger, il va tomber... Le nouveau pont va être SOLIDE. Le pont champlain c'est un peu comme le "pont de Québec"

I wonder how much changing all the signs will cost...

You mean the signs AND the corporation name (Ponts jacques cartiers et champlain inc) Changing the name is an impossible amount of paperwork.

All the contracts & whatnots......

I see it more as an insult than anything else (put his name on a federal things, when he was souverainist ?), the ultimate proof that the conservatives just don't understand the Quebec.

Dumbest idea for a bridge name.

I found Dorval should have stayed Dorval, but this is 10x worse.

Can't wait to leave this dumb fucking province. A hockey fucking player. Seriously. Let's call a bridge in the states micheal jordan or shaq... Wtf is wrong with ppl in this province.

J'ai rien contre le Rocket mais Samuel de Champlain a quand meme fondé Québec et demeure un des personnages marquants de notre histoire...

Histoire/culture/education/savoir vivre/intelligence/politique < hockey in Québec.

Maurice Richard était plus qu'un joueur de hockey, il a fait changé des choses au niveau culturel, politique et historique. Il faut se remettre à son époque pour comprendre les enjeux.

They should call it Pont Lucient Bouchard and only French people can use it.

On a serious note, I all for Pont Maurice Richard. He is a Quebec icon and represents the working man. The working man who will pay to use the bridge.
