I took my crankshaft out today, take a look.

That's my connecting rod bearing cap cooked into the crank. Does anyone know what could have caused this? I rebuilt the engine this winter, but reused the same bearings :( . It's going to the machine shop tomorrow, hopefully they can do something about it.

Damn I'm so sorry to hear.

Its to my understanding the best way to avoid bearing failure especially when having machine work done to the crank during a rebuild is to plastigauge the bearings. What this does is enables you to see how your bearings & crank fit together and will allow you to choose the correct size bearing. I'm sure any reputable machine shop can go into much better detail. I'd really recommend speaking with Tom from TK Motion. Check out http://www.plastigauge.com/ ... Good luck!

causes for this are gaz wash, over revs, bad oil distribution(if any) or bad (too tight ) clearance.

Thanks Richie, I will get in touch with Tom. I just hope I can keep the same crank and rod because I had it all balanced this winter.
I don't think it's over reving because I was breaking in the engine, so I never went over 5500rpm. What exactly is gas wash caused by? Do you mean gas in the crankcase?

I have a GTI.

I peeled the connecting rod bearing cap and it doesn't look too bad, but who knows I'm not an expert. I just hope I can keep the crank because I had it balanced.

whoa.
that looks pretty finished. a guy i work with spun his crank
bearings last year. his a lil' bit of wear marks, not even half as yours, and the machinst couldn't save it.

you should be able to find one at a yard. someone's
gotta have one...

good luck

I'd check out the Vortex for something like that, there's always alotta guys parting out cars on that site, I'm sure there's one hangin around...

It's a 1992 GTI 2.0L 16V (Mk2), the last year or the "real" GTI ;) .

I've been quoted $500 for a complete shortblock, I'm still looking around though. Would it be safe to swap a crank with one connecting rod into my block? If not, what sort of machining would have to be done first?
