The Z35 will honor the 240Z by bringing a modern interpretation to the classic’s long front end and short deck. Essentially it will be a downsized 370Z, which means it will be about 2-inches narrower. But more importantly, the Japanese automaker aims to use plenty of lightweight, high-tensile steel on the Z35 in order for it to weigh in at a class-leading 2,866 pounds.

Currently, Nissan is mulling over whether or not to offer a V6 with the Z35. The Japanese automaker is hoping to wean its customers off the popular V6 that’s currently found in many of its models in favor of a more fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine. It is rumored that the automaker is working on a 2.5-liter turbo-four cylinder that will produce around 330 horsepower.

Nissan may have to dial the performance back however, in order to ensure the car is somewhat respectable in the fuel-efficiency department. Luckily, the brand has its NISMO arm that can produce a high-performance variant that’s more acceptable.

So does this mean the Z35 will replace the current 370Z? It’s possible, and Nissan may be reinventing the Z car all over again. A concept of the new Z is expected to be unveiled at next year’s Detroit Auto Show.

Oh well, I always though the 240z replacement was the curren 350z/370z :dunno:

Exactly what I thought. The Z cars were never in direct competition with the AE86/FR-S. they were up against the Supra and other Japanese super cars. the SX/S-Chassis cars were the proper contenders. They need to come out with a new S-Chassis replacement, or something similar.

Something along the lines of the FR-S; small, light weight, great handling and RWD. Why not use the 2.5 SER engine with a turbo or two strapped to it?

A smaller displacement version of the twin-turbo beast found in the GT-R would be awesome...

Or better, offer choice; A cheaper version, with a turbo 4 for the enviro-friendlies, and then a real one, with a twin-turbo'd or supercharged 6 or something awesome.

Who cares about fuel-efficiency when buying a sports car?

C'mon Joey the QR25 is like the worst engine ever made, but I agree it's time for the S16

I don't know, I'm not a Nissan fanboy :p I just figured 2013 called for a 2.5 4-banger and not a dinky 2.0. So how about an SR25DETT then to make you guys happy?

1) The 350z was more of a 300zx replacement.
2) Noboody really really considered the 300zx as a 240z replacement
3) If they come out with a 2.5T it better not be using the QR25
4) If they do come out with a new 2.5 4cylinder Turbo I hope I can swap it into my SpecV

That would going against just about every trend from every manufacturer... Current, it's all about reducing engine size and forced induction... Hell, even pick ups are doing it!

If it is smaller than a 370Z, a 1.6/2.0 turbo 4 is the logical choice.

Good post. Although they might tarnish the image of the Z car (even though they've already done that coming from the L motor to V motor) from going from a 6 to a 4, this weight loss program is a good idea. I feel like it'll help promote a quicker and a more nimble Z.

The car needs a inline 6... otherwise....

An I6 would barely fit in a 370Z, yet the car is supposed to be smaller...

I think your are all forgetting the standard that set the minimum s pace between the hood and the engine, for pedestrian protection. Notice that all the car have big snouts, now? I strongly suspect that this the real reason why the AE86 uses a boxer engine. In order to keep a low hood, you need a low engine...
