Video: JiffyLube Caught Upselling Car-Damaging Repair Services
Thu Nov 13 2008
KNBC undercover cameras caught local JiffyLubes and EZ-Lubes upselling customers to buy engine-flushing and fuel-injection cleaning services, services which have been forbidden by auto-manufacturers because they're unnecessary and can severely damage your engine. One guy's engine died while he was driving on the highway, and it cost him $5,000 to replace his engine.

Engine-flushing is supposed to clean out the gunk and deposits in your engine, but breaking these up is like dislodging a blood clot - they can jam up other sensitive components. Honda calls fuel-injection cleaning an "improper repair procedure" as it can damage other injection parts. They and other makers have sent notices to repair shops telling them not to perform them. Despite this, KNBC received complaints from across the country from consumers with cars damaged after getting upsold into the potentially dangerous service.

Engine flush I do once every 3-4 oil changes. Injector cleaner is just a bottle of injector cleaner i put after every oil change on the car in the gaz tank....

Is it really that bad?

Oh no, i just got an engine flush, a transmission flush, a coolant flush.
They also put some winter air in my winter tires, rotates my wiper blades, put winter treatement on my gas tank and put winter lights and winter brakes.

Hope it won't damage my car.
Can any one help?

If you do oil changes on time using name brand oils and high quality filters you won't have sludge build up and the engine will remain clean... The same goes for servicing the fuel system by replacing the fuel filter if equipped.

I am not a fan of these 7500km's+ oil change intervals.... A few more $$ in oil per year but changing it at 5000km's is better then changing an engine.

What they mean by a trans flush or coolant flush, is flushing the oil fluid/coolant out with new fluid/coolant. It seems that a trans fluid change never gets done on cars and then people wonder why the ATX trans is slipping...

It's normal for engine oil to get black because it absorbs dirt and other contaminants. If you want cleaner oil run a larger filter or duel filter setup..

Pennzoil has these flush's because thats where they make their money. They make nothing off that 25$ oil change but toss in a 13$ engine flush and 25$ injector cleaning..

The only flush that has been proven to work is AutoRX. Personally I run synthetic in all my cars and never have any issues.

The injector cleaning you are talking about is not what they are referring to in the video. Some garages have a setup that completely by passes the fuel system of the car and runs ONLY on the bottle they hook up to the fuel rail. It doesn't burn the same way as fuel, not at the same rate, and should be mixed in different quantities....that's where the problem lies.

Engine flushes are okay at best. I did it once on my shitbox, but I have never done it on any of the newer cars any of my family member's own.

Like Greg said, if you want a clean, well running motor, just do you oil changes on time and call it a day.
