How North American VW owners are being short-changed with the latest Jetta. Autocar did a good job in sumarizing the differences.

Volkswagen has revealed this European-spec version of its new Jetta saloon in Germany.

The cosmetic differences over the US version of the car, launched earlier this year, are described by VW as “subtle”. But the real changes are underneath, where European models get their own distinct engine line-up and a more sophisticated suspension system.

While US Jettas make do with a simple torsion beam rear suspension set-up, European buyers get a four-link system similar to one seen in the Golf. The system differs from the one used in the outgoing Jetta too, with the car now sporting a wider rear rack and revised springs and dampers.

European buyers can choose from a range of VW’s TSI and TDI engines. Petrol units include 104bhp 1.2 TSI and 120bhp 1.4 TSI options, while the diesels are a 104bhp 1.6 TDI and a 2.0 TDI with either 138bhp or 168bhp. A range of manual and DSG gearboxes are also on offer.

Other changes to the European model include the adoption of an electro-mechanical steering system as standard.

While the Passat-inspired exterior changes are limited, inside European buyers will get higher-quality materials and trims.

The new Jetta will be built at VW’s Puebla plant in Mexico, also the production base for the firm’s next Beetle.

Jetta powered by tacos? sweet! :D

Best VW generation was MKV, however it defeats the purpose of it being called "The People's Car" as it was too expensive.

I think the jetta and golf lost their Volkswagen-ism (yes, thats a word) after the MKII died. The MKIII sucks balls compared to the MKII, and newer models just seemed to move upmarket. It's not a bad thing, but like Fabulaos said, It's not a people's car, not a true Volkwagen.

Look at the Tiguan.
Here:
2.0T engine
6spd FWD, automatic FWD
automatic AWD. That's it.

Europe has all the combinations of engines, transmissions and awd possible.
Instead of keeping the 16 year old 2.0 8v 115hp engine, why not give us the 1.4 TSI engine? This is total bullcrap.

to make the mk6 jetta a 16k entry level car they obviously had to make changes

i personally never thought they would drop this low, old tech 2.0L, rear drums and no independent rear susp...wtf

at least they kept the golf at the same level, however it will take a while before the general public will accept that jetta<golf<passat which i think will hurt the golf's sales

this is called " having a Broody"

I learned to care about plastics because of french forums indeed.

Meh, MKIV had better style and better fit and finish (especially when considering the rivals of their time). The golf mk6 is pretty nice tho, even if it's based on the 5.

All I want is to have Skoda and the 1.4tsi here, as long a VAG won't listen to me, they will fail.
