Ok, let me start by saying I'm NOT looking for a hardcore mountain bike. I live on the canal Lachine and work in the old port. I would like to bike to work but I need new wheels.
I need a commuter type bike.

I was thinking of the Trek District2, ??

I recently bought a Colnago Extreme Power which handles the shitty roads better than the Trek and Specialized bikes I had before

X2

I got a trek buiser1 with xtras and I use it all the time. but when i go downtown or some place where I lock my bike for a long time, i use a beater.

would you park a expensive car in lachine/lasalle/MTL North etc. at night or even the day??

no.... well same with bikes. cause ppl like me will steal it. wheels, frame, seats, anything you can grab.

I dont really worry about having it stolen, the bike will always be inside, either my office, or my loft. Never locked outside.

I wanna spend under 2k, does that limit my choices ? And I dont want to buy used.
:dunno:

and where should I buy the bike ? I only know cycle sport paul, but thats not really in my are anymore

colgano has some nice bikes

you could go to canadian tire, but i have 3 bike from there. they are not always the best. (i have 8 bikes at home)

getting a bike is like getting a car. what will u use it for? do u need a super sti subaru to drive to work everyday? or will u do rally.
same thing with bikes, do you need a full-suspension DH bike to go around city. no.

^my friend who owns cycle & sports paul used to ride this at bromont.

^I plan on making myself a new one by the end of summer. i will take my old roadie, repaint it, and replace handle bars with normal ones.

in conclusion, if you are rich, fine waste your money, buy anything that looks cool.
If you have a budget, get a bike something like in that pic, or a hybrid. they are fast, cheap, and ppl wont look twice to steal, unless its shiny.

also disc brakes are not necessary, don't be fooled by the zellers ones either.
any company is good, i like treks, but had some problems. Speciallized are good but a bit pricy.
then theres gary fisher, norco, rocky mountain. these are ones you could look into.

I just picked up a specialized rockhopper. perfect for me I like to hit light trails so an all out crossbreed does not suffice for me. Just make sure to think on how you want to use it in the future. i.e you might get the bug to hit the hardcore trails up north one day.

It depends on what you want. My physio has a hybrid(half road/race and half mountain). THey are a bit more comfortable than race bikes, but they still have a skinny tire and are a bit lighter weight than mountain bikes. If your work isn't far, then a mountain bike will be fine. You don't need disk brakes(they just add weight and are pretty useless and are only used by downhill bikers). Same goes for suspension; most cheaper bikes put suspension system just to lure in customers. road bikes have no suspension, mountain bikes have only front suspension and downhill bikes have front and rear. Downhill bikes also weigh a lot more than all other bikes since they are made to withstand heavy impacts from jumps.

Anyways, back to your commute. If you don't have a far way to go, then just get whatever. If your commute is longer, then avoid rear suspensions and look for a lighter bike with slimmer tires to give you the most performance out of the least amount of power(slimmer tires=less friction with the road=higher speed).

shocks and disc brakes for someone that's going to using it mainly to commute to work ? Really?

If your going to be riding around town you really don't need a mountain bike and you'll look like a douche riding around in town in one.

Ok, I stated it earlier, but I will pnly be riding on the canal bike path until mcgill street and then up until viger.

The whole commute is very short, probably a 20-25 minute bike ride. I know I can go and buy a random bike at canadian tire, or a higend mountain bike, and they'll both do the trick, but I want a good bike for the $ no matter the price, and my main thing will be biking on the canal bike path.....

that trek 8000 is real nice, but seems a bit much for my needs....?

YUP ! lol the 8000 is a real nice mountain bike very good for some serious action in the trail !!!

for what you say, you dont even need a front suspension... I understand what you say, buying something good for the money and that's ok.. but you really dont need an over 1000$ bike !

Piqui, have you looked at a regular road bike? Much better to commute than a mountain bike with shocks and wide, studded tires.

You don't need any disk brakes or suspension if you're just gonna ride on the piste cyclable or the road

Also, for under 2k, you can find yourself a very good one
I was at the Guru store last week and they had a deal on custom aluminium-framed bike for 1600$ (custom = made to your size). This bike usually goes for like 2k$+
