Koenigsegg's type of R&D is actually the cheapest form available to car manufacturers, he does little to no real world hands on testing of his cars. They are, for the most part, computer simulations.
Expensive R&D is real world testing across numerous climates going through each and every possible real life scenarios of failures to improve on a car. Read up on Porsche's Metzger engine, real life hands on R&D that produced one of the greatest engine block of all time. Every single failure of an engine was followed by a meticulous tear down and examination and many of his findings could not be replicated in computer simulations. Heck even Pagani managed to drive the Zonda for over 1MM kilometers.
Koenigsegg builds show car and collection pieces for a couple Arabs that want the latest on paper bragging rights. God forbid they actually drive the car for a couple thousand miles, I'd love to see what happens then.
