Article: MR: Why does the BMW 7 series value drop so fast?

So I have looked online but didn't really get a straight answer. I realize some luxo vechicles can drop fast but I was surprised to see that a car that was 120K + can drop all the way to 40-45K after 3.5 years

During my winter storage blues I was toying around with the idea of selling the Z for a more all year car (something with a backseat)

I was still going for something sporty with a manual like an STI or more classy like an Audi S5 but then I was like "what If I went complete luxury" and gave up on something sporty and fell upon the 7 series and was SHOCKED to see I could get a 2010 for 40K and not even with excessive mileage.

I don't think I'll go that route but was still very curious.

What am I missing? Super high maintenance costs? Poor drivability? No one likes them? Just one of those things?

Same issue with the S class and A8.. Because when is breaks it's $$$$$ to fix, simple as that.

7 series suffer from their own image/prestige. Once new models come out, the affluent clientele who can afford to buy and maintain them want to upgrade to the latest and greatest.

The used/out of warranty ones are expensive to maintain. The market for these cars therefore consist of people with smaller wallets who want a quality car for cheap or buyers who want to take a gamble and ball on a budget, so used 7 series/s class/a8 typically enter a viscious sell/re-sell cycle as owners with smaller wallets unload them for cheap after a few costly repairs.

Ya that sounds about right, I noticed base A7's were also the same way

Does sound like a gamble if you don't have an extended warranty. Well getting one with all the bells and whistles, black on black is a nice picture...but sounds like it would be a headache down the line

I guess if you got a BMW mechanic as a neighbor that could go a long way lol

Say you are very wealthy man, looking for a big car. You shop for 100K+ cars, as in 7 series, S-Class, A8.

Would you choose a 3 year-old lease return @ 75K$ instead?

In the other way, you have 75K$ for a car. Would you get a brand new 5-series or a 3 year-old 7-series?

That's why they drop in price so much - there is no demand whatsoever for very expensive, high end used cars, bearing in mind that these are not future collectibles like Supercars and Sports cars.

Besides, as was stated earlier, the maintenance costs are out-of-this-world.

Maintenace is expensive and they need a lot of maintenance (aka not reliable)

that's why!

Seriously have you ever owned one ?

i really have a problem with people talking about things they do not know about

I had a 2005 745i, best car i ever had seriously, my dad had a 2004 745LI, best car he ever had and a friend of my had a 2003 745i and he missed it like hell

i went from 80.000kms to approx 150.000kms, only did brakes once, oil chances and a battery

my dad went from 20.000kms to 90.000km approx, never had a problem either, only once in a while pulled out a code about the air suspension (which 745i dosent have) and had a battery done too

my friend had it from 160.000kms or something and sold it when he got 240.000kms, and guess what, maybe a few arms/tie rods down the road, bushings, battery, one alternator rebuilt, oil changes, but thats it

there are alot of these in usa with 200.000miles ++ and still going on oem engine/trans ( you can hear about them on the bimmer forums)

But you must be dellusionnal if you think you will have the same maintenance costs as a Toyota, sure the maintenance costs are more expensive, but if you get the work done at some indy shop, i'll be just fine.

95% of the codes and errors you can have with this car are a battery/alternator problem, they are energy consuming monsters

if you want to talk about a non-reliable BMW, talk about the 2 first gens of X5's

Thanks for the info, another perspective

I find it interesting that the dash display from a 2010 7series is whats used in the brand new 2014 X5 (which I must say is pure sex on the inside) makes my wifes 2012 X5 interior look almost dated.

https://www.google.ca/search?q=bmw+...j7&sourceid=chrome&espv=210&es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8

Not exactly what you are referring to but here is a great video that you may want to watch.....

Cars that once upon a time cost $70k+ and now are going for around $35k+, 50% reduction!
