Noob electrical question: how to install programmable thermostat?

Sorry, I'm a noob, and I don't want to burn my new place down. I'm trying to replace my round-dial, manual thermostat, to digital programmable ones I bought on sale at Rona. When I unscrewed the old dials, I realized it wasn't the same thing at all. Any help would be appreciated, even if it's just "won't work, return day shiet."

So I bought these digital thermostats. Wiring thing looks like this:

I unscrewed the dials from my wall, and they look like this. Only 2 thick wires, which obviously won't fit into the small screws on the back of the digital thermostat:

Behind the plate, it looks like this. Looks like the wires go into "L1" and "T1", and on the other side, there's "L2" and "T2".

The wiring diagram that came with it isn't very helpful at all. Looks like this:

Now my thermostat only controls the baseboard heaters, so I'm guessing I have to wire "L1" and "T1" to my he RH and W screws on the digital thermostat's plate?

Can I just get some 14 gauge wire, and add it as an extension to the wire coming from the wall, so I can screw it on to the back plate of the digital ones? Or will that burn my house down?

Thanks for any help!

Yeah, when I started looking it up, I thought it would be because they're not the same kind.
Does it specify it on the packaging? All it says its that its a 24v....

Thanks guys!

yes 24V system = central furnace, central AC , heat pump etc

24v tstats are used for central heating/air conditionning but also for relay-controlled devices, which you obviously don't have.

How many watts are you controlling with your tstat ?

You need something like this (I have them throughout my house. They're not too expensive and they're easy to program):

Smaller version for max. 2500w @ 240v or 1250w @ 120v (~10A load)

Bigger version for up to 3500w @ 240v or 1750w @ 120v (~15A load)

Thanks for all the info guys. First-time home owner, so I'm learning all these little things... Ignorance is bliss, until you have to do shit yourself.
