hi mr,
id like to get your opinions on the pros and cons of having 2 vehicles.

i currently have a 2005 325xi which is paid for and was very well taken care of and i recently purchased a low mileage f30 lci 340ix which is financed and fully covered by a warranty.

id like to hear from you guys! thanks and have a good day!

if one breaks down, you have a spare?

the main reason people own a second car is because they want a different feeling, need. So convertible, sports, towing etc... whatever the first one can't 2. You seem to own 2 very similar cars... why? I don't see any other pros of owning 2 very similar-use cars, costs twice the plates twice the insurance, twice the maintenance... I dunno man, Sell one. I would keep the "paid for" one if it's reliable, but it's a bmw... lol so, who knows?

Good luck!

You won’t be reaching the old cars key. I sold my E46 because of this. Didn’t cost much to have around but never drove it with 2 new cars in the driveway and when I did drive it didn’t like it anymore. Sold it and moved on

Two cars as my wife also needs oneZ
Provides endless flexibility
Drop/pick up kids, work etc

Would never go back to one car

as @delsolxxxsir said, most people that have 2 cars because they want a different feeling. you have 2 bmws, I get it its not the same but whats your plan with the 340xi, are you driving it in the winter? I'd get rid of one and get a cheap beater for the winter if you're storing the 340.

hey, my plan for the 340 is to keep it oem+ as long as im paying for the financing; after that its going to be fbo time with lowering springs!! im driving both as daily drivers but i prefer to use my 325 when the weather is bad. i aint storing any of the 2. these are my plans for now

so you answered your own question :p you want the other one for modding purposes! Which in turn will give you a different feeling.

Personally, like Greg said, you'll probably get bored of it before you get to spend time on it, but to each his own! have fun

don't listen to me lol

I have:
- a classic car 57 Chevy
- toy hauler Holden UTE
- MX-5 miata for the nice summer days (convertible)
- Jeep JL
- Plug-in hybrid (wifey)

and I'm looking for a AWD fun cheap daily driver

so yeah I got issue but I have parking space lol

I guess it depends how many parking spot you have

lot of car enthusiast own older fun cars.

having 2 is a very nice to have for a backup.

imo, both can be fun cars, only one should remain stock, maintenance upto date and low mileage. (I couldnt resist, both are modded, but one is only boltons)

for me I dont have really any cons, both are paid, I know them very well, maintenance to date. Ive a large driveway.

My saaq is clean, so insurance is very cheap.

Maybe one small con, is when relatives know you own multiple cars, they might borrow the car when they have issues with theirs. By chance mine are manual, so it reduce the risk :p

I drive 35 000km per year so I always have one new and under warranty and a decent older car.

35k km makes the new car depreciate too much.

Negative is maintenance of 2 vehicles.

I got tired of maintaining 4 cars (including the winter beater and the girlfriends) so went down to 3.
Cost factor wasn't an issue for me, but it's really the time and work that I had to put in. I'm very picky on maintenance.

But sure did like the feeling of having to choose which car to use when stepping in the garage.
Having older ''rare'' summer cars, the good thing was also that they weren't adding up lots of mileage so they kept their value.

There's no wrong answers, it all depends on what are your needs, and your E46 won't loose anymore value, so depreciation isn't a issue.
So, if you have the time, money and patience, keep both.

+1,

the next ''family/wife'' car need to be low maintenance. EV probably, not to save $, but to reduce maintenance time.

At some point in my life, I had 3 cars.

1 summer, sport car.
1 winter beater, a real shitbox but reliable.
1 daily, luxury.

summer car could be in the driveway for 3 weeks and there was always something to do on it.
winter beater, I wasn't driving the pos in the summer and at the winter, it was just getting worst and worst over the year. those old cars needs to move, or they break.
1 daily luxury, always something broken, I needed the summer or the beater at some point.

At the end of the year, it was losing money and it expose me to further problems.

Today, I find two cars useless, except it's only to have some fun. ex: track, convertible, sport cars, 2 seater...

your 325 XI doesn't check any of those boxes.

two cars are really usefull when you have two shiboxes, one to gather parts when the other one is broken, the real bummer is when the two of them are broken at the same time. also like ziboy says cars need to move, all moving parts are prone to seizing. every spring there a shit ton of things that start to break on my 3 seasons toy. Also i don't know if it's just pure coincidence but seals tend to start to leak after sitting for too long, but i don't give a shit since it's cheap 80w90 in everything.

I have 2 BMWs as well but one of them has a Toyota badge.

2018 330 x drive with 54,000 kms and a 2023 mt supra.

I get wanting to have a toy that you can mod, let’s get the cons out of the way:

It’s not the best way to use your money, more maintenance, more potential problems, if the financed car get’s into an accident you’ve lost value and now have negative equity on the vehicle.
But seeing as we both have a toy and a daily there’s a whole lotta I don’t give a fuck to be said about the cons.

Pros:

you can keep mileage low on both but particularly the toy, using it as a fun only vehicle and slowing the depreciation.
When you eventually mod your way into PCV problems with the gen 1 B58 you’ll have a car to drive in the meantime, while you accumulate more cash on the side to waste in various creative ways that relate to smiles per gallon.
