Scotch/Whiskey Thread.

Inspired by the Rum Thread. :D

So my cousin got me started on drinking scotch a little less than 2 years ago. I went from cringing over the smell of it, to now, enjoying it neat, and savoring the taste.

I have a small collection that consists of:

- Glenfiddich; nice smooth scotch
- Aberlour; a bit smokey - my scotch of choice for the moment
- Gentlemen Jack (not a scotch, I know); easier to drink that JD. Honestly would not go back to JD after tasting this.
- Johnnie Walker Red Label (gift...); haven't even opened it. Can't do Red Label on it's own... Black Label yes, but I can't enjoy Red.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should go for next? I'm enjoying the smokier taste, so if anyone has another scotch to recommend, please do so. Going to the US soon, so I'd like to take some home. :)

not much of a whisky person.

but i've tried red label, and RL with a splash of water isnt too bad. its a strong taste straight, but a tablespoon of water does wonders.

best i've ever tried is chivas regal. that shit is the bomb.

First of all, Jack is not whiskey, it is bourbon. Despite the fact that the company claims otherwhise, in my opinion it looks like bourbon, it smells like bourbon and it tastes like bourbon. In fact, to me, Tennessee whiskey and Kentucky bourbon is the same shit. The taste is somewhat different from whiskey. Generally speaking, barrels used to make whiskey are then re-used to make bourbon which is why bourbon also tends to be cheaper.

When it comes to whiskey or scotch you should only drink Single Malt. The rest is generally shit. Jack daniels is not single malt. Single malt is alot harder to produce which is why it is more expensive then blended whiskey. With blends, if the taste is a little off, they can mix it to readjust. Single malt on the other hand is self explanatory.

Here are some you should try. They are very different from one another so which you like really depends on your personal taste.

Glenmorangie: It is a single malt whiskey from the UK. It has a light golden color and has a very nice smooth and soft taste and smell. It's extremely pleasant to drink. One of the most easy going whiskeys I have encountered. Should be about 65$ at SAQ.

Lagavulin: Is also a single malt scotch from the UK. This one however is much darker in color due to the special kind of wood used for the aging barrels and has a very distinct smell and taste. It has a lot of character and the taste is much stronger than Glenmorangie (by taste i dont mean the taste of alcohol, the actual taste of the scotch). Price at SAQ should be about 100$

These two should really give you a wide perspective on how Scotch/Wiskey can differ.

If you really want to try some fantastic and original whiskeys, try single cask whiskeys. They tend to be exclusive and very expensive. They fill the bottle out of a single barrel. No mixing. So the taste cannot be re-adjusted by mixing various barrels. In other words there is no room for error. It has to be perfect.

Thanks Dennis. I actually do go for single-malts, and the blended (JW) and Gentlemen Jack (JD) were both gifts.

I'm still not at the point where can't buy a $100 bottle at the SAQ. When I go for a few drinks with buddies, that's when I don't mind spending a bit more, and tasting different single malts. Macallan is one that I enjoy ordering often actually.

I'll definitely give those a try the next time I see them in the selection.

I have celiac disease so I'm pretty careful with what I drink. Blended scotches (Jonnnnnnnie) have all kinds of crap in them to get the colour right. I drink Glenfiddich 12 and Glenlivet 12 pretty much whenever I'm out

Hummm Gentlemen jack

If you find whiskwys too strong for you, add ice to it or a little bit of water... Dilute it and experience the flavor to a greater extent

Adding ice and water or mixing it with soft drinks is sacrilege !, 3-4s drop of distilled water is OK to bring out the aroma in fine single malt Scotches.

Lagavulin is one of my favourites, inlcuding Glenmorangie 18.
You forgot to mention Laphroaig ,Highland Park, Talisker and The Macallan could be a good start for a beginner...but unfortunately not all of them are available here... :(
