The son of Canada's most powerful mobster has been gunned down in Montreal's 31st homicide of the year, according to a report from the French-language service of the CBC.

The Radio-Canada report says Nick Rizzuto Jr., the 42-year-old son of alleged Montreal mob boss Vito Rizzuto, was shot Monday afternoon in the city's Notre-Dame-de-Grâce district.

The report describes a gangland-style killing near the corner of Upper Lachine Road and Wilson Avenue, one of the grittier parts of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.

A man was standing on a busy street near a black Mercedes sedan when at least one gunman approached and fired several shots, the report said. Witnesses said the man crumpled into the fresh snow and police soon arrived to take him to hospital.

The gunman fled the scene, investigators said.

Police haven't confirmed the victim is Nick Rizzuto and are still interviewing witnesses. Montreal police spokesperson Const. Olivier Lapointe said a few witnesses gave partial descriptions of the gunman but did not have precise details.

Vito Rizzuto is in a medium-security prison in Colorado, serving a 10-year sentence for racketeering, relating to three murders in Brooklyn in 1981. Nick Rizzuto Jr., who was named after his grandfather, has never been charged with a criminal offence, according to the Montreal Gazette.

Michel Auger, an expert on organized crime in Montreal, said the last time a high-ranking member of the Montreal mafia was gunned down was in the 1970s.

the less mobsters on our streets, the crazier it will get with gang fights, random shootings etc.
mobsters keep everything tightly packed

believe it or not....mobsters are "good".... mobsters don't kill randomly... mobsters are powerful and know how to keep their shit together...

not like mtl-nord naggers

That's actually somewhat true... for example, Mobsters keep meth out of the big cities (or at least they try to). Meth is more destructive than cocaine. People on meth can't keep a job and thus have no money to pay for their high. People on yayo can keep going to there 6 figure job everyday no problem. Meth consumes peoples' lives entirely so the gangsters don't want it around. It's a cheaper more effective high but it's BAD for business.

Whether or not any of this is in any way moral is a whole other argument... I'm not trying to justify any organized crime but a lot of parallels can be drawn with how the government guides their decision making on substance control and how OC does it.

I just don't want to see a new age of car bombings etc. in the city :(

For sure there will be a few, there always are, but now everyone is looking for a select few, people that want all these bars blown up and now, these guys for killing his son. usually its the italians controlling this stuff and sending blacks or the bikers to do there dirty work, but they wouldnt bomb eachothers bars...something will give soon enough

Only the 31st homicide? Numbers not a lot if you ask me. Is that accurate? I mean it's really low for a city like Montreal.

"Grittier Parts" ...

Yeah.. This was entirely too close to home.. So I'm just gonna go into HERMIT MODE right about now.

I live pretty close to where he was murdered and used to live even closer. When my girlfriend and I were looking for an apartment together, we actually looked at one of the apartments whose back alley he was murdered in.

I really don't consider this area to be "gritty". Sure, there are some undesirable elements, but I've never really felt unsafe around here and I've lived in this area for almost 17 years.

Montreal has one of the lowest homicide rates in North America for a city with over 500K people. Last year, there were only 28 and the year before saw 42 homicides.

lol, i went to see one of those condos on that corner... SKETCH! That whole area is waaay sketchy. I would never live there.
