the teen faces up to $15,000 in fines after police nabbed him

A 19-year-old Ottawa man nabbed in his right-hand drive car at more than 100 km/h along a downtown street will have a costly reminder of the price of speeding.

As police gear up for road safety week, the teen faces up to $15,000 in fines after police nabbed him shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday, at more than double the speed limit.

Police said the man was flying down Somerset St. at speeds of more than 100 km/h, with traffic in the area and pedestrians milling about.

Ottawa police Const. Nermin Mesic was in the area when he heard a loud revving engine.

“All of a sudden, I hear this sound coming from at least a block away,” said Mesic. “I look over, and this vehicle drives right by me at least twice as fast.”

Mesic hit the lights and sirens and followed, spotting the car pulling the wrong way onto nearby Percy St.

The driver then pulled the older Toyota Celica into a driveway.

Blake Chester faces several Highway Traffic Act infractions, including stunt driving and driving the wrong way down a one-way street.

The driver also had no insurance, which is a $5,000 fine alone.

And the extreme speed could see him hit with a fine of up to $10,000.

Police said Chester took responsibility for his driving and didn’t make excuses for his actions while testing out his newly acquired sports car.

The car and his licence has been seized for seven days.

A judge will decide the stunt driving fine at later court date, which was not available Wednesday.

While the extreme speed would be worrisome on a highway, it’s even more of a recipe for disaster downtown.

“There’s more factors that can go sideways that can cause a really dangerous situation,” said Ottawa OPP Const. Rheal Levac. “People don’t expect that kind of speed.”

During next week’s road safety campaign, one day will be geared toward speed enforcement throughout the city. A “Mega RIDE” check will also done with OPP, RCMP, Gatineau and military police.

Speed is cited as one of the major contributing factors to traffic injuries and deaths.

In 2010, a 22-year-old Ottawa man driving recklessly in his right-hand drive Nissan lost control and killed two people waiting at a downtown bus stop

:yikes:

Stupid kid, in no way am I in defense of the driver however there is conflicting information in this post. Was a radar gun used to accurately measure the speed?

Send the car to the scrap yard...

Lol 15,000$

Il aurait conduit un toyota camry beige et frapper trois écolières en boisson pis y'aurait meme pas a payer ca !

That kid is a fucking moron. That street is an narrow mostly one lane per direction downtown street with intersections every 2 blocks at least. What a fucking tool. He deserves not to drive for a long time.

I love how they feel the need to specify that he was driving a RHD car like it had something to do with the situation...

Le ''MegaRide'', c'pas en décembre ça? On est pu le temps des fêtes à ce que je sache. - J'ai l'impression que j'vais me faire coller pour mon exhaust à ces maudits checkpoints là. Déjà arrivé à quelqu'un?

most of rdh drivers are ti coune... thats it

The only reason one would think that is because media makes a point of letting everyone know the car was RHD when some random kid messes around with one. You never here about the quiet majority of us who never mess around though. the only time RHD is ever mentioned is when something goes "bad"

In pure straight up numbers, there are 10X more ti-counes driving in Mazda 3's and Civics alone than all RHD's combined.

They mention RHD mostly because of the idiot who killed two people waiting for the bus in 2010 in the same area. It's not just a matter of he went fast, he went fast in a place where people actually died because of that.

Yeah it really sucks that they do that, its not like it makes a difference to the general public if the car was RHD or not

what's so special about doing 100 in a 50 zone?...so many people doing this on cote vertu every morning..now when you do 150-200 in a 50 area..then you can talk about danger..

Yeah no big deal with 100kph in a 50 zone usually, but if they say its a small street then maybe.
