The english in Quebec... seen from a now english canadian.(yes, another one of those)

This is going to be a rant and it might not be popular. Keep it civil.
I have lived outside of Canada, and in 3 different provices. I live in Ontario at the moment.
I am perfectly bilingual, although I speak oxford english, I also speak spanish, german, and have learned latin. I think I`m pretty well educated. I am a mild monarchist and federalist, a passionate Canadian and a proud french and english speaker.

The main reason I am posting this is because there is something I do not understand. Something that has annoyed me for years a many ; the situation of English people in the Province of Quebec and their revendicating.

Canada is a confederation. This means that although each of it`s parts are not sovreign states united under an umbrella, it is highly decentralized therefore it`s like every province is a small country. The can enact their own laws, as per the constitution of 1867 and have exclusive jurisdiciton over certain subject,s under that same constitution.
Out of all the territories and provinces, one is french speaking, one is bilingual. In new brunswick, everything is bilingual and you can be served under both official languages. If I am french speaking, I have reasonable expectations of being served in french there. If I`m english speaking, I would definitely fancy this place to settle as well as I can reasonably expect to be served in my language. If I am english speaking, and I want nothing to do with the french, I would likely avoid New Brunswick, as chances are I will encounter french canadians. As an anglophone though, I have complete freedom of settling almost anywhere in Canada. There is no doubt that as a majority, my rights will never be compromised. I will never lose my english. I will always be a majority, wherever I go in Canada. In fact, even as an anglophone, I will find people in Quebec who will assist me best I can if I can`t be bothered to speak french, which I don't have to because I am english speaking, in an english speaking country, a majority, and I have no interest in french whatsoever.

Now, don't get me wrong, the French police has been a shame for the province, but here`s my question. Quebec is strictly french, because the people there, under the canadin confederation, have decided to go about and live their lives in french. The are allowed under the Canadian constitution to run their daily lives in french if they chose so, just like people of NWT have chosen to run their stuff in aboriginal languages, and same thing for nunavut. There is no border preventing you as a Canadian to move to Quebec. But I'm going to ask you this question : Why?

Why, as a resident of a french speaking enclave, do you act like a little bitch. Why do you insist on having your business signs in english, why do you insist on running you business in english, why do you refuse to learn the language, why do you wave your english fucking rights in these people's face? You can speak whatever fucking language you want at home, you can watch the telly in whatever language you want, your favourite artists are singing in english, your videogames in english, you can laugh with an english accent with your mates making jokes in english of british humour. Nobody is trying to take away your english but why do you act like you are being denied the right to be an english canadian, when in fact, the courtesey is only to follow the rules, and the rules are in french there. I stopped in some places in the west island a few times and as a Canadian, I find those english qubecers to be the most arrogant, despicable kind of the east coast. They have issues, the act all insecure and try to bite first. They will decline to serve a person in french while being perfectly fluent in french just to spite them. But why? You're not threatened in any way, but why do you insistst on making drama! Here in Ottawa, I go from english to french with the people there, I don't expect everyone to serve me in both languages, but it's granted that I'm in english canada, so you don't see franco-ontarians acting up. They speak french together, they have their neighbourhoods, their own french signs, but they don't try to change the whole place about. The speak english at work with anglophones who will answer in broken french, and go back and forth, with varying degrees of fluency in both languages, just because that's the beauty of this place. Nobody feels threatened, and especially not the anglos. So why are the quebec anglophones so tiny-cocked? And for those who do not with to learn french and just arrived here, what in god's name posessed you to chose Quebec out of all places, if not to troll those people?

I just want to close this by saying that there is "acharnement" on both sides, the french police is clearly picking on some english speaking people in the province, and I do not agree with the whole closure of english colleges if sufficient demand justifies it, but I still cannot understand why the anglos try to push the french like that? I think that unfortuantely, people try to put it as 90% french fault, but I think it's 50/50. And I'm not saying you are not allowed to be english in a french province, but just like you are allowed to set your own arse on fire, why do you do it?

Care to enlighten me, MR?

Simply put: It's not always a question of CHOOSING to live here. A lot of English speakers are BORN here...and they should not have to leave simply because a certain few decided that the province's language should be French. The city of Montreal, which is where half the province's population resides (GMA), was established and populated by 4 groups, the English, the Irish, the Scottish and the French. That's 75% majority of English, yet French is still the language ENFORCED across the province.

Note: I am in the same boat as you. Fluent in many languages and accommodating as much as I can. And I can honestly say that I have NEVER seen an English speaking eprson do anything you described. I've only seen French people do anything mentioned in there.

PS - My name: Joey Villeneuve...I am even of French decent and can admit this.

I agree, but it's just a fact of life. You were born in a place that speaks french. And don't get me wrong, I'm not telling you you should leave, but why can't you just be 10% french? People born from immigrants didn't chose to be born here. Take any immigrant, who's child are born in their country of origin, they didn't chose to move here, their parents did. They might feel very asian, or very african, they might speak the languages on Canada with a very strong accent. But they only have to do that while out in the society. They can watch their native programmes at home, speak their own language, cook their own food, and whatnot. Everybody has to accomodate as some point, but why cannot the english quebecers is what baffles me.

First of all, i'll explain a bit about my situation, i'm born french canadian but do have nearly half of my family who are native english speakers. That said, i also lived abroad (Sweden) married a Swedish wife and learned the swedish language.

You just said it, Quebec IS by fact unilingual french province. Have you ever tried to speak french in the rest of Canada? I did, just for fun.
Not only they are extremely harch (hearing from "Speak english" to "Speak white". Replied that "Canada was a bilingual country... "
These are the answer of many english speakers who comes to Quebec. They take for granted that everyone speaks perfectly english and they deserve to be answered in the Shakespeare language. Canada isn't a bilingual country i think that it mistakes everyone...

Canada is an english speaking country with a french speaking province and a bilingual one...

Have you ever been to Barcelone? Catalonians struggles just as much as Quebecers.

Also, keep in mind that there is ass holes everywhere... in Ontario, Quebec or name it... same shit everywhere and most people are under educated swallowing everything media give them.

As I stated earlier, I only see the French being douches. I have not seen an English person do anything you've mentioned. If anything the English are more accommodating than anyone else. Making laws based on language, is exactly the same thing as making laws based on ethnic background and religion. If Quebec can make a law saying everything must be done in French because that's how we feel the province originated, then they should also make a law that states that everything must be Christian, because that is also how the province originated.

The actual reality is that the province was settled, grew and became what it is today because both the French and English speaking communities made it so. To deny English speakers of any services in English, or even use of their language in a province they helped build as much if not more than the French, is to deny what they have given to craete and build this place. Telling them they are not an important part of the province.

I don't give a shit if someone can't serve me in English, it's a french province. But, i do believe it should be the right of anglos to serve other anglos in english if they please.

A culture should never be dominant by oppressing another. It should be dominant because it is embraced by those who follow it.

If you like history... have a look how the English Kingdom used to treat their overseas possession... (just take a look at the commonwealth)
How did they treated french in New France, Natives in US, Afrikaaners & Boers, in S.A, how they treaded the natives in Australia... they were oppressing them.

I'll have to agree with dread specter about the west island people being douches with french people. Happened to me a couple of times when I spoke english and got served like shit because they knew I was french. Not that I had any difficulty speaking english but..I dont know...

I still cant figure it out why... Why do w-islanders hates us so bad. I personally never made fun of any anglo in my life simply because it was simply natural for me to speak both. I was raised with both languages and never bothered me. Au contraire!

I used to work in Boucherville and id say that more than half of the shop was english. Never bothered me at all. We used to share expressions, words and correct each other just for the positive side of it.

I think were both at fault in this game, its a 50-50 situation. Why dont we just try something out. We should all try this at least five times whenever you get the chance, just be nice to each other next time you meet someone who speak the other language.

Lets FUCKING defuse this situation once and for all.

Agree 100%

Haha see, I don't mean to pick on you but you're exactly that which I do not understand. A french speaking person would never get out of quebec and expect to be served in french, yet, for some reason, believe that because they speak english, the french should accomodate them. The anglos from Montreal feel soooooo entitled, it's disgusting(don't get me wrong, I'm mearly buliding the thought further, but this is not in reference to you personally). Because Canada was made from a mix of french and english doesn't warrant the french having to accomodate the english on their own turf, same thing for the english with french, for reasons of logic and practicality. I don't expect to find a French speaking clerk at walmart in Yellowknife, but the english of montreal feel and about feel that they should be different, because they speak english haha. You know what, I honestly believe that this is what is driving the French police to act in bad faith. I'm sure if the franco-ontarians started acting like that, there would be an english police in Ontario.
I honestly find such an entitlement from a minority to be astounding! The french have earned the legicimacy of their language, and I personally find it beautiful. I really do not understand why an anglophone feels he should be accomodated. I really do not believe he should, even though this is where opinion would diverge. Whenever I got back to Quebec, I switch to 100% french and am pleased to do so, even though my daily routine in Ottawa is almost strictly in english. It's just normal, I find.

Its weird, its just as if we were molded that way.

See, I don't always agree with you, but that's my train of thought. I do not have an "accent" in either languages, but I`ve noticed the service given to a French speaking person on my way back through the west end of montreal and it was appaling. The english speaking clerk clearly tried to spite the franco, and really made sure he felt he got off the wrong exit and ended in a territory where french is welcome no more.. In quebec! And this is something I have never witnessed. You should see how the francos are in Ottawa, they all embrace their franco-ontarian heritage with enourmous pride and despise quebecers for their close mindedness ( my mate worked at the tourist office by the queensway, and a lost quebecer aregued with him he was still in quebec, because there was no way someone would speak french is he wasn't.... what a goofball). So the ball goes both ways, but the question im wondering is why so much hate and entitlement from the anglo-quebecers. And yes, the Quebecers are a soft kind. The Acadians find they are pantsies because they got amssacred by the english and don't complain nowdays, and the franco ontarians feel that they are close minded and anti-canadian, giving all francos bad rep. But the french speaking cultures of canada are VERY different from one another, and quebecers are a breed of their own.

If you like history... have a look how the English Kingdom used to treat their overseas possession... (just take a look at the commonwealth)

Yep, let's not mention the Acadians and the "grand derangement"

Complexe du colonisé et non du colonisateur...
Sad but true

Quite simple. Opression breeds hate.

And this is exactly what makes the case of quebec so unusual. "Oppressed"(take very largely here) french people in a land of Angles, "oppressing" those very Angles.

But how can the oppressor feel oppressed? This is what baffles me, and this is why I don't understand the behaviour of Anglo-Quebecers, who are both playing the card of the oppressor and oppressed (i.e. I am super entitled because Canada is english and I can speak english wherever I want, and the same English crying wolf to everyone, and perticularly the ROC, about being discriminated because they cannot do as they please in English). A massive case of split personality, of a whole social group.

Because there is still that grudge from back in the days when there was an upper and lower Canada.

No one reall knows why they hate their frenchie or anglo neighbor, they just hate him! Prejugés, idées preconcues et entretenues avec les années. My father in law is 60, he speaks both languages and hates anglos because he still think these fuckers from the west island despise us in the bottom of their heart. So he serves them the same recipe that keeps the grudge going on.

It also comes from the era where anglos had the buisnesses and money, when the french canadians we're ''yes men'' in shops. My grand father worked all his life for the CN and he told me about how much his bosses hated the frenchies. On how they thought they were maggots etc etc.. My grandfather was not fluent in english but always managed to keep a short conversation when it was needed.

Tu généralises beaucoup trop à mon avis.
Ma majorité des gens au Saguenay, Gaspésie, Abitibie ne parlent pas l'anglais... même à Québec.
Great Montreal area isn't a representation of Quebec...

Would you say that Toronto represent Ontario?...

Quite simple. Opression breeds hate.

I used to work with pure Quebeckers that only speak french and I always noticed that they felt oppressed by anglophones. Probably because of the lack of knowledge. I guess you fear what you dont understand and hate it at the same time.

As you said... the only major english minority that voices their concerns is in Montreal. And the language police only strikes in Montreal. So unfortuantely, it is the flagbearer of the whole issue, even though it IS generalizing.

And to be honest, Ottawa is a little world of it's own, just like Thunder bay, but I can easily live with the generalization that Toronto = rest of Ontario. The culture is the same all throught.

It is true, but unfortunatly, the Quebecois identity is that of a Teenager. A nascent identity of one who just left the flat of mum and dad (back when EVERYTHING was controlled by the english) and is thrown into the world, and has to act like an adult even though it doesn't fully have it's judgement yet. So it does a LOT of stupid moves and tries to learn from them, and tries to thrive in an adult world of serious, well established people who have been around the block. And it gets scared very easily.
