UDOT opens up new 80 mph speed zones

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that the speed limit has been increased to 80 mph in several areas of the state.

Following recently completed speed studies on several rural freeway sections, UDOT crews installed new 80 mph speed limit signs this week on I-80 from the Nevada border to state Route 36; I-15 between north Leeds and Santaquin, with sections of 75 mph zones through two mountain passes and Cedar City; and I-15 and I-84 from the Brigham City north interchange to the Idaho border.

UDOT stated that the speed limit increase was the result of HB83, passed during the 2013 Legislature, which allowed the department to study and establish speed limits higher than 75 mph on interstates.

UDOT’s data from speed studies of existing 80 mph zones showed that vehicle crashes have slightly dropped over the past three years, attributed to more vehicles traveling at the same speeds and less variation in the speed of surrounding vehicles.

Ca serait tellement le fun...Mais le pire c'est quon s'habituerait a 120kph et on finirait pour vouloir aller plus vite.
 
140-160km/h is a great cruising speed. When I travel to Europe I have a tendency to avg 150-160km/h on the highways. It makes one much more alert. Then again, it is Europe where the roads are in great shape and people respect the rules. Would never work here...
 
S'il augmentes les limites a 120 ici, ils vont instaurer une politique de tolérence 0 alors on va tous se ramasser a rouler a la même vitesse que d'habitude, et ca nous aura couter 500M en frais de remplacement de pancarte.

That wouldn't work here on so many levels, not only stupid government but bad roads, traffic etc. None of which will ever get fixed anytime soon. *td*

c'est méchant, mais quand y va crever on va finir par arrêter d'avoir le maitre des matantes sur toutes les tribunes,
 
People in this province are too dumb and incapable of going the same speeds they do on European highways. We're too busy hogging the passing lane at 105 and merging onto highways going 60 without a flasher or checking blind spots.
