What happens when you don't tell insurance about your suspension?

Just wondering, cause I called to change my claim, but now I've been on hold for 5 mins cause I told them "I'm planning to change my suspension."

Lulz.

If they find out that I did have a different suspension, can they refuse my claim?

Just wondering....

Wow, just got owned.

Got back to me and said "unfortunately, we cannot offer insurance if you do change the suspension."

So, what happens if I do that? Get a policy without telling them I've changed suspension?

Well, my insurance dosent know about my mods, If I get into an accident and my coils are damaged well to bad, pay for new ones or try and swap them for oem ones and claim.

They only will refuse to pay you if the accident was caused by the un-declared suspension.

what a bunch of homo's i had that with my stang, they would have a heart attack if they ever see the car and what i have done to it.....i have changed everything but the paint lol.

A few years back a guy on MR swapped an Integra engine in his Civic and did not tell his insurance to save a few bucks. A few months later he crashed his car in one of those big a$$ light poles on the highway that are like 100 feet high. When the insurance adjuster saw the different engine, they cancelled his policy and he was stuck with the pole bill and a hunk of junk he still owed 20k on. I think the pole was like 50k plus, that, he might still be paying. Just makes you think what saving a few bucks could end up costing you.

Thanks for the heads up.

It's not that I'm trying to safe a few bucks, but I just wanted to renew my claim, and since I just turned 25, it should be cheaper (already $200 cheaper at a different company.)

I understand that an engine is quite the difference on the car, but wheels/suspension?

Oh well, time to call more insurance companies.

What do you mean by "change my claim" / "Renew my claim" ?

Do you mean policy?

Anyways most insurance companies include a certain amount of coverage for Declared modifications (usually 2 000$). Above this amount, they might charge an extra premium per additional 1 000$ of mod coverage.

Other companies have underwriting rules specifically prohibiting the acceptance of a risk with modifications. These companies have usually had a very bad track record with these risks, however it is rare nowadays.

Remember that modifications impact coverage in two ways

1) additional amounts paid in case of a claim (higher severity)
2) claims analysis (done by actuaries like me) show that vehicules equipped with modifications have a higher accident frequency than an equivalent risk without mods. Numbers don't lie.

Change, as in, go to a different company for my insurance since I have a group rate with work.

Renew, as in it's ending in August 21st, and instead of accepting the policy at the same price as last year, I can find another price $300 cheaper.

I always thought your insurance goes down when you turn 25. Seems like my current policy will renew at the same price.

BTW, did all of you claim your suspension/wheels?

I don't plan on doing any major mods. I even remember one broker who dealt with AXA telling me that I don't need to tell them that I have different springs, bigger wheels, and a $1000 sound system on my old accord. Was he just telling me this cause he was lazy?

Ok just fyi its confusing when you say claim to mean policy.

AXA afaik covers the first 2k, as long as its declared. not declared = not paid (those parts) if loss or theft. Additional coverage is provided at a cost, but they are not anal about mods, meaning they won't refuse to cover you, you just have to pay for extra coverage.

If you're broker says you don't need to tell them, well you can always hold that against him in case of a dispute (which there will be if the issue arises). Instead of risking that, just get proper coverage. All my mods are declared and always have been.

Awesome, thanks for all the help.

Sorry, I've been throwing words around cause I was at work at the same time. Plus the site is in french, so I didn't know which words to use to translate.

they refused me @ belaire because i had invested too much into my car with the coils, exhaust, radio and all. they simply told me "no". bastards.

I told them that I "was planning to buy suspension worth $500, installed by a certified mechanic."

Put me on hold for 5 minutes.

Then came back to me and said "sorry, we can't offer you insurance"

After spending 15 mins with me on the phone confirming all the info I gave them online already. And the first thing I said was "hi, I'm calling cause I submitted a quote online, and I wanted to know if I can be insured with modifications done to my car."

FAIL.

I think the best is to get a car evaluated once it has a SIGNIFICANT amount of modifications done to it. You keep all your bills, show evaluator, work on a nice fair number and get that paperwork. After that you go to insurance and explain, having an exact number to declare stating the car was evaluated by professional (they will like hearing this) and then you explain that the car has upgraded parts. Asking about changing parts scares them away!

I'm with a broker right now, I'm paying less, but I really hate the garbage service. Hours being 8 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday. Each time I call, the two bonhommes that work on policies are always busy, I always have to wait for them to call back...When I was with TD I could call and speak directly to someone between 8 am and 8 pm, 7 days a week.
