SMC enterprises’ subaru WRX water-alcohol injection system are composed of a brand new Subaru windshield washer fluid tank. Flojet demand spray pump, electronic progressive controller, and a custom spray nozzle. By using a Subaru issued 1 gallon tank, the installation of the fluid reservoir is simple and clean.
SMC also includes a small auxiliary washer tank and pump to retain the windshield washing function. The flojet pump offers a compact design, measuring only 6.4 inches in length.
The fully automatic pump self primes to operate dry without damage and is rated to flow 1.g GPM (3.8 liters/min) with operating pressure to 25 PSI (1.7 bar)
THE SETUP
Installation of the SMC enterprises water-alcohol injection system was easier than expected and installed in just a few simple steps. Beginning with the nozzle, a small hole was drilled and tapped in the inlet of the intercooler. then the spray nozzle was tightened in place. The included 24 inch stainless steel braided line was secured to the nozzle and routed to the reservoir location. The factory washer tank was the removed and replaced with the SMC unit with attached pump. To preserve all the original functions of the vehicle, we installed the mini washer tank to keep a small amount of windshield wiper fluid on hand. Moving onto the wiring portion of the install, the main wiring harness was routed through a pre-existing hole in the firewall. The controller was mounted inside of the vehicle as well as power and ground wires. After filling the tank with a 50/50 solution of water and methanol, the installation was complete.
ON THE DYNO
On XS Engineering’S DTS all-wheel-drive chassis dyno, our Subaru Legacy made a series of passes to establish the baseline power figures. With 16.9 PSI of boost pressure being produced by the AVO turbocharger, the legacy put down 336.8 horsepowers to the wheels and 310.8 lb-ft of torque. On these runs, Peak horsepower came in at 6600 RPM while peak torque was seen at 4800 RPM.
With the SMC water-alcohol injection system active, Koji Arai of XS Engineering looked to increase power output by both adding boost pressure and ignition timing. After tuning in the progressive controller unison with engine tuning on the EcuTek ROM-tuning software a substantial amount of additional power was realized. At just 3000 RPM, increases in both horsepower and torque were recorded. By the time the EJ257 engine reached 4000 RPM, an additional 50 horsepower was found with the anti-detonation system in place. At the same time,65 lb-ft of torque was added to the 4000 RPM point on the graph. These increases in power production were massive in the midrange, and extremely noticeable in the high RPM. At 5200 RPM, the powers levels with and without alcohol injection were close after 5500 RPM power was brought back up with a 10-20 HP increase until the 7200 RPM redline. The final peak horsepower number was increased from 336.8 to 345 HP at the wheels at the same RPM. In the torque department, an extra 34 lb-ft of peak torque was recorded nearly 400 RPM sooner. This is in part due to the quicker spool up of the turbo, which hit peak boost pressure (18.8 PSI) 300 RPM earlier.
BOTTOM LINE
With solid evidence of the benefits of water-alcohol injection, the activists are screaming “ I told you so!!” We were able to extract an additional 50 midrange horsepower along with 65 lb-ft of torque. Top end power would have improved even further if boost pressure could have been increased more. However, as boost tapers off in the end, so does the amount of water-methanol solution being injected. In any case, these significant gains were realized with just a 2 PSI increase in boost pressure. Best of all, this additional power was found with the pump gas in the tank and a decreased knock count. With the success of water-alcohol injection on our project vehicle, we are now full fledged believers in the systems. If your vehicle can be equipped with similar water-alcohol injection systems,it definitely deserves a look!
