:run: I am going crazy car shopping and trying to pull every resource I got to make a sound decision, so I need your help!!

just wanted to know if you or anyone you know has gone through this with the Ralliart or Evo. how much is the insurance on this if I am 21 with 4 year experience..blah :dunno: :( i might just end up putting it under my father's name if I can't see myself paying both the car and insurance but hey it's life! i really want this car.

speaking of the car, is it wise choice going for this or not? i looked at others in the same category (mazda3,6,sentraSv,VWGTI..etc) seriously my eyes are set on the evo.

any advice/help appreciated. negative people can click the x on top right.

u will pay up the wall for a new Evo @ 21. I went thru a similar process this year with subaru, wanted a WRX and the quote I got was ridiculous (i am 21). Settled for a regular Impreza which was more in my price range for insurance ($1900). I tried to go second driver on the new WRX and my insurer still laughed at me lol. Good luck man, the Evo is rly dirty.

Do it

non pas pour moi.

Online quote belair : 3300$
5 min apres avec le gars au telephone : 1900$

:dunno:

i looked at others in the same category (mazda3,6,sentraSv,VWGTI..etc

Ya, I could imagine insurance being pretty insane for a 21 year old buying a new Evo X. Putting under your father's name isn't gonna help you at all if he already has a car, the insurance company is gonna know you're the first driver on it and it'll cost you the same thing.

moi jte dit don't do it..ta d'lair a avoir dla misere a te payer les assurances..imagine le char..

Never even heard promutuel, I'm with aviva and I pay 1k a year for a 99 oldsmobile intrigue, I can't wait till I'm 30 lol.. I've also got a completely clean record...

maybe I should give promutuel a call :p

My buddy just bought a 2009 mazda 3 GT 4door automatic, costing him $2400 a year I think, he had his first crash last october though, was his fault too.

I owned an Evo VIII for 4 years and 60K miles. Let me share some of my experiences to help you make an informed decision.

how much is the insurance on this if I am 21 with 4 year experience..blah
Insurance is very expensive. When I bought my Evo, I was 29 or 30 years old. Zero accidents. Zero speeding tickets. I was paying significantly more for my Evo than my buddies were paying for their E46 M3s and Porsche Boxsters.

Evos get stolen a lot. They get crashed a lot. Parts are super expensive. Therefore, insurance is stupidly high.

speaking of the car, is it wise choice going for this or not? i looked at others in the same category (mazda3,6,sentraSv,VWGTI..etc) seriously my eyes are set on the evo.
I'm sorry, but I had to LOL. If you think the Evo is in "the same category" as a Mazda3 or Sentra, then you're WAY off base. Ownership costs are phenomenally more expensive. Like I said, an Evo is more expensive to own than an E46 M3 or Boxtser. No joke. No exaggeration. There's no way you can compare the costs of owning and running an Evo to the cost of running a generic FWD compact car like a Mini, Mazda3, Sentra, or Golf GTI.

Here's what I wrote in response to a similar question on the MCCC forums...

me said:
My experience with an Evo VIII that I owned for 4 years (driven in Quebec and Boston) was that after just 3 winters there was significant corrosion under the hood. The 4th year, I had to replace the alternator, which had rusted solid. The paint is very thin and chips easily = more corrosion. These cars are NOT as corrosion resistant as a new BMW for example.

Just out of curiousity(not trying to be a smartass). What extra maintanence does it require over the gts other than synthetic oil, premium gas?
Don't kid yourself. An Evo is a very high maintenance car. On the basic Evo VIII and IX (with no AYC), the basic service intervals looked like this:

  • oil change (full synthetic): every 3000 miles
  • transfer case/front diff (Mitsu DiaQueen): every 6000 miles
  • rear diff (Mitsu DiaQueen or similar): every 6000 miles
  • transmission (OEM Mitsu or similar): every 12K miles
  • cooling system flush: yearly
  • brake system flush: yearly
According to my buddies who've owner earlier Evos with AYC (Evo IV through Evo VII) the AYC system needs to be flushed and serviced every 3-5K miles if you use it hard. So, that rear diff interval might be half of what I wrote above.

If you drive 10K miles per year, that means the car is in for service at least 3-4 times per year, and half of those are big jobs. Total service costs are easily a few hundred bucks a pop.

All of this assumes a manual tranny. God knows what it costs to service the new paddle-shift tranny. Those things generally eat through clutches like potato chips. Fluid change intervals are generally shorter than regular manual transmissions.

Don't forget, every 30K miles, you've got a MAJOR service. That includes new clutch ($1000 plus labor), new plugs, new seals and o-rings in the head, new valve-cover gasket, new timing belt. Put 100K miles on the car and you'll be doing this 3 times :(

And let's not even get started on tires, brake pads, and rotors. The car eats them up. Worse than an M3. Guys who run stock turbos find that they usually start to let go between 75K and 100K miles. So add the cost of a new turbo (or a turbo rebuild) to your list.

On top of that, you're talking about a car that burns through a tankful (40+ liters) of 94 octane fuel in 200 miles...maybe 220-240 if you REALLY pussy-foot around. I was barely managing 230 miles per tank on the highway driving like a granny. Might as well drive a Hummer H1.

And then add insurance costs on top of that. Ouch.

Bottom line: The Evo is a very, very expensive car to own. If you're doing big mileage, driving all year round, etc. it's going to get very expensive very quickly. When all the costs are put together, it would honestly be cheaper to buy a new M3. That's not an exaggeration. A brand new E46 M3 (or C.P.O. Porsche 996 C2) would have cost me less to own in 4 years than what my Evo VIII cost. No joke.
Hope this helps. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Sorry, dude. I didn't want to crush your dreams :( But the Evo is one of those cars that "seems" affordable...until you start to add up all the running costs. And if you try to save money by cutting corners on maintenance, then the car falls apart. I know it sounds crazy, but you have to treat an Evo like an exotic car. Careful break-in. Careful warm up and cool down. Intensive (and frequent) maintenance. And you can forget about parking it on the street: it's under CONSTANT attack by thieves and joy-riders. You have to pay for parking everywhere you go.

The fuel consumption was simply obscene. On the street: 42 liters in just 200 miles. On the track: one 20 liter jug for each 20 minute session at Tremblant or Mosport. Think about that for a second...one liter per minute! :run:

I went over all this with people I know and they said the same thing...
You just need to know what you're getting yourself into. I had been around Evos since the late 1990s. My friends back home (Istanbul, Turkey) have been racing them for years and I had first-hand experiences with all the Evos from the Evo IV up to the Evo VII. So, when the Evo VIII was finally available in the USA, I knew exactly what I was dealing with.

At the time, I was considering a new E46 M3 or a certified pre-owned (CPO) Carrera 996 C2. It sounds crazy when you consider that the Evo is almost half the price of those cars...yet it's in the same stratum as far as ownership costs go. There are TONS of hidden costs. Insurance is just one of them.

The Mazda3 is a great handling car. My ex-girlfriend (also a BMW Club instructor) used to have a base Mazda3 (2.0L engine) and that car was a blast to drive around the track. I loved the handling and steering feel. It honestly feels like a FWD version of a BMW in terms of handling. I love it. And those Duratec/MZR engines are absolute gems.

You might also want to check out the Mini Cooper. I know it looks a little girly, but they handle very well. And the suspension is very well-damped. Visibility is great. It feels like a modern version of the BMW 2002tii or E30 318is. Great all-around package.

Thank you for posting the background, makes me more comfortable sticking with my decision of not pulling the trigger. ;)

I'm shopping for a four door, so the mini is out of the equation.. I am just thinking of putting it off for a couple more months, let the market unfold a bit more.. save moneh to put towards %15 on capital for mortgage :) ah this just makes me feel better.

Thanks for the advice dude.
