Because Britain and then USA controlled it all. Heavy equipment is SAE as well. Might have switched by now though

Construction material should be sold here in metric as it is in the EU. Canada is caught in this strange metric limbo as the USA is 45 mins away. Notice how I said "sold as in" because even there imperial units are used when shopping but it's sold dimensionally in metric.

Same reason as why fruits vegetables will be listed as $/lbs and $/kgs but rang up in kgs or grams

I grew up metric so to me imperial is useless. I remember once someone gave me ride heights for a car in inches and I was like wtf is that in MM. Had to convert it as my tape measure was Metric
