Volkswagen‘s hottest of hatchbacks will make its way to U.S. soil, confirms the German automaker. A spiritual successor to the R32, the Golf R is part of VW’s new ‘R’ performance brand, and gets its motivation from VW’s always-impressive 2.0T turbocharged 4-cylinder rather than the old V6 in the R32.

While VW hasn’t released specs on the engine, in Europe it receives the same state of tune as in the Audi TT-S, making 265-hp and 258 ft-lbs of torque. So far, VW USA will only say it’s a,”significant hp increase over GTI.”
Mated to VW’s 4MOTION AWD system and offered exclusively with a six-speed manual, the car should be able to hit 60 mph in about 5.5 seconds.
The upgrades don’t stop with the engine, however, with the full R model getting 18-inch wheels, a center-exit dual exhaust, upgraded brakes, a lowered suspension and a more aggressive stability control program. VW also plans to offer the car in both 2-door and 4-door hatch versions.

A special R interior will also be included with a special shift knob and steering wheel, although it’s not likely to be exactly like the Euro-spec model and we’d be surprised to see the same sports seats here in the U.S.
VW is likely to debut the U.S.-spec Golf R at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show as it moves ahead with a plan to uphold its brand with special high-performance models while it simultaneously pursues a plan to offer lower-priced volume models like the new Jetta and upcoming Passat replacement.

moar news! 6 speed Manual!!

After running numerous polls in our forums, campaigning endlessly to try and convince VW to offer the Golf R here and all the behind the scenes negotiations that took place at Volkswagen of America we finally have good news - the Golf R is coming to America.

Volkswagen of America announced today that it will offer the 260hp, all-wheel-drive Golf R in both two-door *and* four-door (yeah!) configurations starting 4th quarter of 2011. A six-speed manual transmission will be the only transmission offered in our market. We expect the Golf R to be available in two trim levels, both well equipped. All cars will have Climatronic and leather seating standard. The seats will be the top sport seats with "R" logos embroidered on the headrests (see photo below). The higher trim level will offer RNS-310 navigation, Dynaudio sound system, a sunroof and Kessy keyless start. Volkswagen is holding off on pricing announcements till closer to launch in 4th quarter of 2011. We expect pricing to start below $34k though so long as the dollar and Euro don't get more out of wack.

This has been a very long project that a few key people at Volkswagen of America and Germany worked hard to make happen. For the first time the Golf R will be available in both 2-door and 4-door variations in our market. Certifying two different transmissions would have been costly and drove the price up further, so the decision was made to stick with the six-speed manual. Colors will be announced later with pricing. Until then, Volkswagen of Germany is tooling things up to prepare for production next year and we'll wait patiently (yeah right) till we hear more.

And there was much rejoicing...

It looks nicer in person with the flared wheel arches.

The fit & finish is top notch and top of industry standards.

cars at that price have pretty much the same but offers much more performance.

Well... speculation states around $38k in Canada

Mazdaspeed3: $33k and much less luxury features and no AWD
WRX Limited: $36k and still a lot less luxury features
Audi TTS: $58k same exact car as the Golf R (same engine, same awd, but DSG tranny, just as much luxury features as the R)

what its at the standards of Broody or something? cars at that price have pretty much the same but offers much more performance.

go test drive the MKVI. I hate VW but I have to admit defeat when it comes to interiors. yes, hp sucks but as an daily driver, I would take that over a Mustang.

Les chances d'en avoir une ici sont pas mal plus grande que celles d'avoir une CR-Z R. Et pour intérieur, les Européens ont vraiment une coche d'avance! Magnifique!

Now we must have the next Audi RS3.

It's just sad that they don't put cloth anymore (instead of platic) on the window pillars, like in the mk4.

I like the golf 6, but it's still expensive for a compact, and too heavy to be sporty in it's R version. We are far from the first golf gti.

Ran out of paint to do the mirrors?

Tu ne comprends rien au design. Les miroirs sont un ajout obligatoires et indésirables pour la silhouette. Les peindre en noir au lieu du ton carrosserie permet de mieux en faire abstraction et d'apprécier les lignes pures de sa silhouette.
