what the unlock do?

Reveals all the menus which B(H)ell normally locks down...
Usually it's just a reflash of a firmware to a more generic firmware and not ISP specific.
Modem is brain dead with the Bell custom firmware.. So this unlocking makes it usuable with all DSL ISP.
Google it, and you will find piles of sites with instructions on how to quickly unlock it, if you have one..
