When I was shopping for my M3, I found the perfect one (silver, 2003, manual, 120k km, fully loaded, 19'' wheels) and I was ready to buy. I'm from the Gatineau Area and the seller was from montreal. I called him many times, exchanged over a dozen emails, spent 50 bucks to get the full carproof etc. We agreed on a price, I had the cash, I was ready to buy. He told me I could have the car inspected ANYWHERE I WANTED, I told the guy I wanted to meet at bimmershop for a PPI, took a monday off to get it done. On the morning we were supposed to meet, I was picking up my friend to drive down to Hudson to see the car, again, cash in hand. I get a phone call as I'm picking my friend up and the guy wanted and ATTAC (attestation de transaction avec un commercant) since my friend's dealer was buying the car for me and financing a part of the cost. We told him on several occasions he did not need that, I was driving down with a checque from a legit VW dealership and he insisted. I was about to set it up when he called me again saying he looked up the address I gave him and it lead to a house in the middle of a field. I went on to explain bimmershop is a reputable shop that the owner runs in his house's backyard. He told me he didnt trust it and wanted to have the car inspected somewhere else.
I told him to drive down to Gatineau to my mechanic's shop, if all was good we would drive directly to my friends dealership where all the paperwork would be done and I offered to actually drive him back to montreal. He said he was gonna ask his friend (who supposedly ran a used car dealership) and called me back with the same story, shop in the middle of a field (it's on the outskirts of Gatineau). I pointed out the shop was a registered business, that if you look on google street view you can clearly see it's a legit shop etc. He wouldn't budge. I then called and setup a PPI at Duss Brothers BMW specialist (downtown ottawa for christ's sake) and he said he didnt want it done that way. He called me back saying he booked an appointment at BMW laval the next day and that was the only way he was going to sell the car. I was incredibly frustrated but agreed since I really wanted the car. I took the tuesday off and was ready to buy the next day and make 2 trips to Montreal. 10 minutes after I hung up the phone, I found my current car in Ottawa on kijiji (had just been posted 2 days before), setup a viewing and inspection at my mechanic and bought my car that very same day. Picked it up on the tuesday because the banks were closed by the time all was done and called the Montreal seller to tell him I had just bought another car. He sounded pissed and surprised at the same time, saying I wasted his time etc. etc.
I told him on several occasions I was buying his car no questions asked if it passed the inspection and offered him a ride back to Montreal (what more can you ask for really?).
All in all, I saved over 3k and got a rarer color, better seats and a car with fewer kilometers, so it turned out great. I don't understand why people fuck around so much when selling/buying a car. Are you ready to buy or not? Are you a business person or not? I don't fuck around when it comes to buying or selling cars and people who do annoy me to the highest level, but it's all part of the game in the end and makes finding the perfect car that much more rewarding!
Cliffs: Read the f*ing story you lazy ass!
