So I live downtown now and sadly I had to start shopping around for food recently. How about a grocery store comparison list?
Me:
IGA is always the best and if I had to choose between moving next to one grocery store, the next closest one being 100 km away I'd choose IGA in a heartbeat. Provigo is cheap on the trash food but they charge you for thinking about buying produce there.
Metro is just too damn expensive. There's nothing in a Metro you can't find for cheaper in another store, even if it's on special. I usually don't even bother going there even if it's the closest grocery store.
There's the Loblaws on Rachel and Davidson. That one is the best but I don't like other Loblaws, so I'd probably move next to a Sobey's in this case.
Other pros and cons? Loblaws has nice house brands; No Name and President's Choice are both usually fine in terms of quality and OK in terms of price but always seem to leave something to be desired.
I associate IGA with real cooking from quality ingredients. IMO they're a socially responsible business that has my health and overall well-being in mind, while keeping its own budget strong to expand and keep-up the service level.
Provigo has awful service too. The people who work there have no fucking class, forgive the expression. It's a chore to pay for my food there. IGA can have my money and I'm cool with it.
There's a nice Arab fruit store around here too, Lobo. They sell good produce at a fair price. Eden has some rare stuff but overall it's quite meh and I usually avoid going there. For Asian stuff no store beats Kim Phat, it's a super nice supermarket on Jarry E. Classy, clean, well-stocked, very good prices. There's even a restaurant attached to it, it's not what people usually think when they think of a Chinese grocery, they really stepped that one up.
Anyway, I could go on but I'll keep moar for latar.
