Sold the Saabaru. Corolla is surprisingly nice to drive. Considering personalized plate options based on the color. GM has no new cars available.

tl;dr part

It's CVT with simulated 10sp paddle shifter that I'll probably never use.

Didn't want another manual car to be stuck on Boul. Des Anciens Combattants for 1h with on the way home from work in January. Replaces the Saabaru, it was a fun car to have and will be missed but I kinda grew tired of the 100lbs/sqin pressure required to operate the clutch and harsh suspension. Guy that bought it seems happy with it.

I tested a few other cars and wound up picking this one because of the price vs tech included in the XSE trim. To get similar trims on other cars I considered would've been at least 3-4k$ more depending on the model. The Toyota app is really cool I wonder how much it costs per month after the 1yr "trial" that comes with the car.

Sales guy threw in winter kit (Tyres/Rims/Carpets/free tyre storage for a year) and window tints (not installed yet tint guy was on vacations) I added comically large spoiler and smart self dimming mirror options.

To be brutally honest the car has like 165HP and isn't very fast, but it corners well and looks pretty cool. Easy to find in a parking lot vs a Crosstrek or Mazda3/cx-3/cx-30. I'm not disappointed but the car could probably be tuned to be slightly quicker - squeeze a handful more HP out of the little motor.

Fuel economy is good for a N/A 2.0L especially when the radar cruise lane keep is active on the highway. That is a pretty cool feature I never had on a car prior. Touch the steering wheel is enough for the car to "drive itself" to a stop if required by traffic. The whole thing is unsettling at first. I expect the next car I buy or lease, probably in 4-5 years after the CTS breaks down unfixably (or I my wife gets tired of it) - to be self guiding and maybe electric.

I would've bought/leased an EV if they had 600+km range and faster charging available for similar price but I REFUSE to pay a premium just because a car is EV. No justification, EV is less complex to manufacture than a conventional internal combustion engine and often there is no transmission required. No reason behind the extra 10k and more for a Soul EV or Bolt (not that any are actually available) that are the only affordable ones with "decent" range for me.

BTW - GM's parking lots are epically empty. Both dealers I called/visited were basically used car dealers but also they have like no hatchback models other than the Bolt. Honda to my surprise was the same - at least the dealership in Ile Perrot - don't know about the rest - I didn't try very hard, don't like the current Civic model.

All both VW dealerships I visited had left were lots of Jetta manual base model and normal trim Golfs. I might have gotten a GTI if they had any available but 10k more for 240HP seems like a lot IMHO + the interior wasn't as nice as even the Corolla wow.

Don't really like the Mazda "egg" look on their hatchback lineups.

Too many Crosstreks that all look the same because they haven't "really" changed the model since 2012 and it takes an expert walkaround to tell which model/year/trim any given Crosstrek is.

Took a quick look at the available Hyundais and Kias but pound for pound the Corolla was better. I wanted a hatchback and they didn't really have anything nice that looked interesting enough for me.

I considered other colors but I can't bring myself to buying a beige Corolla.

I dislike the fake exhaust tips at the back and the runflat option that lowers the trunk floor and gives a little more space. I don't need THAT much space for Costco runs and the occasional couple bags of pool salt or garden earth. Would've preferred the normal spare tyre.

Ninja edit for the lane tracing assist feature video.

This is a really cool feature that is included I was really unsettled and impressed at the same time by how effective it is. Hit some traffic between MTL and St-Hyacinthe Saturday and I barely had to do anything other than keep 2 fingers on the wheel.

I was parked next to one exactly like this at Les Iles de Boucherville this weekend. I was ashamed to say it but it's a beautiful car, but only in this color. Great choice
