Cool down

With all the turbo specialists here, think it might be appropriate to ask. Before shutting the car down I always let it cool by letting my car idle for about 2 minutes. As stupid as this sounds, am I over doing it?

GTI07BLACK, ever considered getting a turbo timer? Might be useful in your case. You can manually set the cooldown time or some more advanced turbo timers actually automatically adjust the propoer shutdown time according to the situation. Always a good idea to warm up your car properly and let it cooldown properly as well. Two minutes might be too much but it's still better than shutting the car off immediately after a spirited drive.

All depends on your driving really. Don't go from beating it at redline WOT to shutting it off. From a normal drive I'll just wait 10-15 seconds personally. Basically I try to organize stuff before turning the car off rather than turning it off then grabbing whatever.

After each pass at the track I drive it back slowly, takes about 2-3 minutes. Then I open the hood and let it idle maybe a minute.

When I come back from driving it on the street I just shut it off when I'm parked like I would with any other car.

I always let it cool down for a minute or 2 even if I dont beat the shit up... If I do, I smoke a cig and listen to a track then shut the engine off

same , i always take it rly easy the last 5-10 min before going home , even when i get home i let it idle for 1 minute with the heating to the max this way it cools the prestone also and the one that goes in the turbos too and then i turn it off

On my Evo, I do 5 minutes after a track session, for street use its more like 1 minute.

unfortunately the turbo timer doesnt serve me well in these varied instances.

In the end, the most important IMO is to use the right oil for you use and change it as required- based again on use.

I use my boost guage to try an stay off boost for the last leg of my drive (about 2-3 mins) and then can shut it off. Works better than idle as you have air flow through the engine and proper oil pressure; 12 years and no issues. As stated above it is key to run a high quality oil.

Theoreticaly any full sythetic that meets the VW requirements for the engine will be good. I run Motul 300V or racing formula as I drive hard and only in the summer. I have tried Total but noticed a significant rase in temp; for my MB Diesel engine I use Mobil 1 ESP as it is the factory fill and needeed for the DPF emissions control.

Exactly what I do.

No point of letting it idle for minutes because you are raising the under hood temp.
That would be for a street driven one.
