A lone sketch has leaked out ahead of the North American International Auto Show, revealing the next step in Volkswagen’s carefully planned growth strategy in America. After expanding its market share considerably with new Passat and Jetta models designed specifically for the U.S., the German automaker is now planning a seven-seat crossover to rival the likes of the Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota Highlander. This new three-row machine hits a popular segment that Volkswagen is currently not competing in.

Looks like an Volkswagen version of the Audi Q7.

With an innovative new plug-in hybrid diesel powertrain, the Volkswagen CrossBlue Concept has just been uncovered today at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.
Although the CrossBlue is larger than the Touareg, it is meant to a be a midway model between the Touareg and Tiguan in terms of price.
Powering the CrossBlue is a 54-hp electric motor up front,a 114-hp electric motor mounted in the rear, and a 190-hp TDI engine that combines to put out 305 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. It is all mated to a six-speed DSG transmission. Volkswagen estimates that the CrossBlue will be good for 35 mpg combined when running as a hybrid, and 89 mpge in electric mode. And despite the good fuel economy, performance is still decent with a 7.2 second sprint to 60 mph.
For optimal powertrain use, three different drive modes are available: standard, Eco, and sport. Thanks the diesel engine, range anxiety is non-existent in the CrossBlue, which has an all-electric range of 14 miles, and an overall range of 661 miles.

In the test cycle of the European R101 ECE standard for electric hybrid vehicles - based on computations that cannot be compared to those of the EPA standard - the estimated fuel consumption is 2.1 liters per 100 km. Despite this superlative economy, the CrossBlue offers impressive drive system characteristics with a power of 225 kW / 306 PS and up to 700 Newton meters of system torque; the midsize SUV completes the sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.2 seconds (0-100 km/h: 7.5 s).

It was about time they came up with that kind of technology... diesel-electric engines have been around for years in trains and shit but they;ve been delayign ti in cars forever. I don;t even know who thought of making gasoline hybrids in the first place, such a waste..
