Rolls Royce Teases The Return Of The Wraith At The Geneva Motor Show

That smoky teaser photo of the Spirit of Ecstasy might not specifically allude to what we’ve come to expect from auto teasers, but rest assured, Rolls-Royce is planning for a grand return at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The British automaker has just announced the upcoming release of the most powerful model the company has ever built: the Rolls-Royce Wraith.

Auto historians might remember the Wraith from way back in the 30’s. But since then, Rolls Royce hasn’t used the name in any models, making this comeback all the more tantalizing. No official details have been revealed about the Wraith, but it does put credence to all those teasers and spy photos we’ve seen in the past months of a model that we previously thought of as the Corniche.

The reborn Wraith, which has been reported to pack a turbocharged 6.6-liter V-12 engine with 600 horsepower, is expected to be Rolls-Royce’s third model, following the Phantom and the Ghost. To their credit, the British automaker is off to a good start drumming up interest for the car.

“Expect the boldest design, the most dramatic performance and the most powerful Rolls-Royce that has ever played host to the famous Spirit of Ecstasy figurine," said Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös, before adding that we should expect a model whose starting point is "luxury, refinement and exclusivity".

Expect the Wraith to be available for purchase towards the latter part of the year. Until then, RR promises to release additional teaser images at 00:01 GMT on February 12th, 19th and 26th. We’ll post them once they are released.

Press Release

MOST DYNAMIC AND POWERFUL ROLLS-ROYCE IN HISTORY SET FOR DEBUT AT GENEVA MOTOR SHOW

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars today confirmed the launch of its next model, Rolls-Royce Wraith.

The car will be presented for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show on 5 March 2013, with first deliveries to customers expected in the fourth quarter of 2013. Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, confirmed the news at the company’s World Dealer Conference in London this morning.

“Rolls-Royce Wraith will draw superlatives when it is unveiled in Geneva,” he explained to representatives of the 100-strong global dealer network. “Expect the boldest design, the most dramatic performance and the most powerful Rolls-Royce that has ever played host to the famous Spirit of Ecstasy figurine. We will present a model whose starting point is luxury, refinement and exclusivity, traits that have made Rolls-Royce the world’s pinnacle luxury good for the last 108 years. This is a car not only defined by a timeless elegance, but one that encapsulates a sense of power, style and drama,” added Müller-Ötvös.

BMW Group board member and Rolls-Royce Chairman Harald Krüger, affirmed the company’s latest step in the drive for sustainable growth. “The BMW Group is confidently investing into the long-term future of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars,” he said. “And this exceptional new car will build on the finest principles of the company’s forefathers – the world’s best engineering, the employment of cutting edge technology and peerless craftsmanship.”

Wraith will be the most dynamic, powerful and beautiful Rolls-Royce in the company’s history. It is a breathtaking car that will set a new benchmark in the ultra-luxury segment and will reaffirm the position of Rolls-Royce at the absolute pinnacle of automotive luxury.

The launch will revive one of the most famous Rolls-Royce names first used in 1938. The ethereal name Wraith perfectly expresses the character of the new Rolls-Royce. “Wraith alludes to an almost imperceptible but powerful force, something rare, agile and potent, a spirit that will not be tethered to the earth. It is the perfect name for our new model.” added Müller-Ötvös.

When you encounter Wraith, your world stands still as it whispers by. It possesses an unmistakable presence but is difficult, if not impossible, to corral. It defies attempts to contain it.

Wraith draws inspiration from the story of the Honourable Charles Rolls, one of the company’s founding forefathers and a man who indulged a passion for innovation, engineering and, most importantly, adventure. Rolls was a passionate racing driver, balloonist and aviator winning the praise of King George V, who hailed him the ‘greatest hero of the day’ on becoming the first person to cross the English Channel and return non-stop in a flying machine.

Like Rolls, the new car embraces the very finest things in life – elegance, beauty, refinement and luxury – to be enjoyed by a new generation of confident gentlemen and women. It will boldly shape the future of Rolls-Royce, building on the success of Phantom and Ghost, bringing new customers to the marque.

In the weeks leading up to Geneva, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars will reveal additional information and a series of teaser images via its PressClub website, to be released at 00:01 GMT on the following dates:

12 February 2013

New info about the RR Wraith

Rolls Royce initially used the "Wraith" nomenclature back in 1938 when the original car was launched on the market, and then again from 1946 to 1959 when the Silver Wraith was unveiled. Now the company is preparing to use this name one more time, but this time for a coupe version of the Ghost - initially rumored to be called Corniche.

The car was caught once again during cold weather testing near the Arctic Circle and almost simultaneously, Rolls Royce unveiled the first official teaser image revealing a little bit of the car’s silhouette. As the company announced, the Wraith’s flowing lines are a hint "at the extraordinary power and dynamic promise of the most powerful Rolls-Royce in history."

The new Wraith is rumored to be powered by a turbocharged V-12 delivering as much as 600 horsepower. All this power will be sent to the rear wheels via a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. No specifications are known at this point, but the new Wraith will be the fastest production Rolls Royce to wear the Spirit of Ecstasy ornament.

The 2014 Rolls Royce Wraith will make its world debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

The Rolls-Royce Wraith will borrow its BMW 7 Series-derived underpinnings from the Ghost and is also set to inherit its 6.6-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine – albeit with its output hiked from 420kW/780Nm to around 450kW and 800Nm.
Spy shots captured last year revealed a dramatic sloping roofline for the new coupe along with a shallow glasshouse and shorter rear overhang than the Ghost’s.
Initially rumoured to be called the Corniche, the new coupe sees the Wraith nameplate return to the brand’s line-up for the first time since the 1930s, when it was applied to four-door model of which 492 were produced.
Muller-Otvos said ‘Wraith’ – which is defined as an apparition of a living person that appears just before that person’s death – was the perfect name for the new model.
“Wraith alludes to an almost imperceptible but powerful force, something rare, agile and potent, a spirit that will not be tethered to the Earth.”
