The Porsche 917 prototypes in 1970-1971 couldn't steer very well above a certain speed, the aerodynamic balance was off at high speed and would make the front very light. It was a case of flooring it at the beginning of the straight and hoping your aim wasn't off. :p
 
The advances in Motorsport are not in the speed department - the Nazi Silver arrows could reach 330kph (roughly similar to today's F1). The advances were in the braking and road holding.

Said Silver Arrows only had shitty drum brakes and tires only 6 or 7 inches wide... Yikes!
